Tattoo Aftercare
  • Tattoo Aftercare

Thank you for trusting me with your new tattoo! The hard bit’s out of the way - now it’s time for the boring, but equally as important, part of looking after it!
  • 1. Second Skin:

I will usually use a second skin cover on my clients. This should be left on until it comes off of its own accord, up to a maximum of 5 days. Expect the edges to get a little tired and tatty looking by the end, but so long as the tattoo is contained, you’re all good!

OR if you have allergies to adhesive/plasters, or we have tattooed an area that second skin may not adhere:

    2.Clingfilm:

Keep the clingfilm on for the first hour after getting tattooed, or until able to wash the tattoo. You do not need to rewrap the tattoo again once the clingfilm is removed.

  • Remove the dressing gently in the shower, and wash it gently with warm water and an antibacterial soap. Please make sure to foam and agitate the surface to remove all the plasma and gunk that will have been caught by the second skin. This slime is the normal and natural response of your body to the trauma we put it through.

Once your tattoo is clean, allow it to air dry before applying a thin layer of your chosen aftercare cream with clean hands. You ideally want enough that the cream soaks in, without any excess left on top. Remember that less is more.

Expect some soreness and itchiness, but if it is particularly uncomfortable, antihistamines taken as directed on the box should help. If you have excessive redness, heat or swelling during the healing process please get in contact for further advice.

Apply your aftercare cream once or twice daily after cleaning until healed, which is usually 14-20 days after tattooing.

During this time it is important not to submerge your new tattoo underwater (baths and swimming). Please ensure to cover your tattoo to avoid extended periods of direct sunlight as you will be unable to apply sunscreen to your healing tattoo.

Settling of a new tattoo usually takes around 1 month. After this time, please get in touch with a clear photo if you think you are in need of a touch up. I offer a touch up free of charge within 6 months of the original appointment, but always prefer to tie this in with your next session where possible to minimise waste of unavoidable single use plastics.

  • Additional notes:

    • A tattoo is an open wound and will be itchy while healing. Do not scratch it!
    • Do not use fake tan, perfumes or cosmetics on your new tattoo.
    • Avoid sunbeds for the first two weeks after your appointment.
    • Your tattoo will leak ink and plasma during the first few days of healing, be aware this could ruin your bedsheets or clothing.
  • Thank you!

    Paddy
