Summer 2022 Intercultural Learning Programs & Collaborative Research Projects

These programs allow students to spend full days shadowing across various specialities and units within a hospital or clinic.
Some or all expenses may be covered by Knox College Health Professions Advising.
Each program has a cap for the number of students accepted, due to space and staffing constraints.
Who can apply? Students from any major/discipline are encouraged to apply. Special priority will be given to students who are interested in rural healthcare. All prehealth students are welcome to apply, although those interested in medicine, nursing, dentistry, healthcare adminstration/management, and public health may find this experience most relevant.

Winter Break 2025: November 30-December3, 2025 at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, IL

Deadline to Apply: November 5, 2025

3 full days of shadowing in various specialties at an award-winning hospital.
Program begins on December 1, but arrival in the early evening on Sunday, November 30 is required - it's an early start on Monday December 1. Depart for home after 4:00pm on Wednesday December 3.

Lodging: Students will stay in Macomb, IL at a hotel (expense covered).
- Housing on-campus before and after the program is NOT covered. Talk with Campus Life to determine your on-campus housing plans.
Transportation:
- Students may drive their own car. If you want to do this, it is preferred that you allow other students to ride in your car with you (carpool style). Your gas expenses will be covered. If needed, a rental van will be reserved (and paid for by Knox); students will meet at Knox to travel together.
- Your travel from home to Knox (before the program) and from Knox to home (after the program) is not covered. For example, if you live in Denver and you want to go home for Thanksgiving and then return to Galesburg to catch a ride, your trip to/from Galesburg is not covered.
- If driving in the car of another Knox student or in a rental car, your travel between Galesburg and Macomb/Carthage is covered, as are the daily commutes between Macomb and Carthage.

4-Day Shadowing, March 16-19, 2026 at Seminary Village in Galesburg, IL

DEADLINE TO APPLY: February 6, 2026

Four full days of shadowing at the Seminary Village retirement community. Students will rotate among various healthcare professionals: nurse practitioner, nurse, occupational therapist, physical therapist, and speech therapist.

Students may drive their own car or take the Galesburg city bus (free for Knox students). If you want to drive, it is preferred that you allow other students to ride in your car with you (ie carpool). Your gas expenses will be covered.

3-Day Shadowing Program, March 18-20, 2026 at Graham Health System in Canton, IL

DEADLINE TO APPLY: February 6, 2026

3 full days of shadowing at the hospital and the clinic, as well as meetings with hospital administrators, staff, and healthcare professionals
6 student spots
Lodging: You will be asked to arrive in Canton on Sunday March 17 because the program starts early on Monday, March 18. The hotel in Canton, IL is covered. Sharing a room with a student of the same gender will be required, although some accommodations/flexibility may be possible.
- Housing on-campus before and after the program is NOT covered. Talk with Campus Life to determine your on-campus housing plans.
Transportation:
- Students may drive their own car. If you want to do this, it is preferred that you allow other students to ride in your car with you (carpool style). Your gas expenses will be covered. If needed, a rental car will be reserved (and paid for by Knox); students will meet at Knox to travel together.
- Your travel from home to Knox (before the program) and from Knox to home (after the program) is not covered. For example, if you live in Denver and you want to go home for the weekend before spring break and then return to Galesburg to catch a ride in the rental car, your trip to/from Galesburg is not covered.

3-Day Shadowing Program, March 18-20, 2026 Public Health

DEADLINE TO APPLY: February 6, 2026

3 days of public health-focused shadowing in the region: One day at the Knox County health department (Galesburg), one day at the Warren County health department (Monmouth), and one day at Eagleview Community Health System (Oquawka).

Lodging: On-campus, not covered by Health Professions Advising
Transportation: Student-owned cars for carpooling or a rental car will be provided

1-Day Shadowing Program, date varies between March 16-20, 2026 , Graham Health System, Galesburg, IL

DEADLINE TO APPLY: February 6, 2026

1 full of shadowing at Graham Health System, Galesburg, across pediatrics, family medicine, convenient care, and imaging
4 student spots, up to 7 hours of shadowing per student
Lodging: On-campus, not covered by Health Professions Advising
Transportation: Student may drive their own care or take the Galesburg city bus (free for Knox students).

If you are selected to participate in a Knox-sponsored shadowing program, you must agree to do the following (please read and check all the below boxes) as a condition of acceptance:

Attend the Shadowing Program Orientation on Wednesday November 19 (Reading Day) at 10:30am. This is mandatory and attendance will be tracked.Complete a post-program survey, sent to you via email.Correspond via email with the Vovis Center in a timely manner, completing all paperwork as necessary.Complete all required vaccinations prior to entry into hospitals, including COVID and flu.
