  • This competition is a platform to showcase  the voice of Rangatahi in the Ngati Awa rohe. The competition aims to energise and affirm Rangatahi, to realise potential pathways into the Arts and beyond. 

    Who can enter? Anyone aged 16-24 years who live in the Eastern Bay of Plenty area

    How many times can I enter? Maximum 3 art pieces per entrant
       
    How many prizes are there? 9 in total, 3 for each category
       
    What are the entry categories?

    Kaitiakitanga - the concept of guardianship as you interpret it. Ie whenua, tangata, atua and everything in between

    Protest – your political opinion. How do you feel about the world around you, how would you change about the decisions impacting on you and your whanau?

    Open –This is open to you and your interest.

    ***If there are any works with natural fibres/materials, please let us know, so we can make sure processess are in place. 

    For Example: Please note that your work has been identified as a possivle risk to our heritage gallery, please provide information on how your natural fibre, or natural materials have been processed, We also ask that yu either freeze your work for 1-2 weeks to kill any bugs that may reside in the natural materials, or wrap in plastic for 2-3 weeks, a mist of bug spray can be applied prior to wrapping in plastic to aid in killing any unwated pests***

  • TERMS AND CONDITIONS

    • 1. GENERAL INFORMATION 
    • 1. GENERAL

      1.1 Entry is open to all who live permanently in the Ngāti Awa rohe. 

      1.2 Artists can enter through this official form. If you need help with making a submission, please contact:

      1.3 A separate entry form must be completed for each entry. You may submit up to three entries.

      1.4 Entries are open. Entries Close Friday 21st March 2025

    • 2. ARTWORK 
    • 2. ARTWORK

      2.1 Work can be in any 2D or 3D visual arts discipline.

      2.2 All works are to be original and not infringe upon NZ copyright laws. They are the work of the artist entering. All entrants are to be the owners of the work(s).

      2.3 All works must have been completed during 2024 / 2025

      2.4 Works entered must not have been exhibited in another art award or competition prior to this exhibition.

      2.5 If artworks need to be maintained, this is the responsibility of the artist, and any maintenance or special requirements must be negotiated with the Exhibitions Team.

      a. All artworks must have secure surfaces; i.e. fragile pastel and charcoal surfaces must be ‘fixed’. Paint and varnish must be dry.

      b. Paint and varnich must be dry

      2.6 Special installation instructions and hanging equipment will be followed by the Exhibitions Team when provided on submission

      a. Special maintenance and operational costs are the responsibility of the artist.

      b. Artwork will comply with Health and Safety standards of the Whakatane District council

      2.7 All works accepted will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition period.

      3.1 There is a limit of 3 submissions per Artist

      3.2 Submissions can be in any material of your choosing

      3.3 Artists are required to provide an artist statement for each work submitted

      a. Artist statements to be a maximum of 100 words.

      b. Statements will be used in the pre-selection and final judging of works.

      3.4 Entry information is final and cannot be added to by the entrant after submission.

      3.5 The Exhibitions Team will inspect the work.

      a. for any damage or flaws.

      b. to ensure that the entry criteria are met prior to installation.

      c. the artwork is appropriate for display.

    • 4. PACKING, DELIVERY AND RETURN OF WORK 
    • 4.  PACKING, DELIVERY AND RETURN OF WORK

      We will receive artworks Thursday 20th and Friday 21st March 2025, 10:30am-3:00pm

      4.1 Entrants are responsible for delivery to, and the collection of works.

      4.2 Freight is the responsibility of the artist.

      a. Works that arrive by courier MUST have a return ticket attached.

      b. Gallery staff will repack artworks in its original packaging where possible and arrange dispatch of artworks.

      c. If the work is sold, the courier ticket will be returned to the artist.

      d. All packages MUST be clearly addressed with the sender’s details on the outside.

      4.3 Personal and Courier Deliveries: Works are to arrive Thursday 20th and Friday 21st March 2025 (10:30am – 3pm)

      a. Personal Collection and Courier Return of works: 3rd April 2025. Dispatch coordinated by Te Tohu o te Ora o Ngāti Awa Exhibitions Team

       

    • 5. INSURANCE AND SECURITY 
    • 5. INSURANCE AND SECURITY

      5.1 Artworks are not covered by insurance or unforeseen damage or loss while on the premises.

      5.2 It is the responsibility of the artist/purchaser to insure artworks

      5.3 We will handle all artwork with care and professionalism required in an art gallery/exhibition setting

    • 6. HEALTH AND SAFETY

      Any exhibitor with an entry that may have specific legal, environmental, safety or security applications to be met shall undertake to carry out these procedures, and to meet the standards and policies of Te Whare o Taketake Museum and Research prior to installation 

      6.1 Selected works with electrical components must be tested and tagged

      6.2 Natural fibres/materials used in any art piece must be mentioned to the organizer/s.

      6.3 Information must be provided on how the natural fibre/materials have been processed

      6.4 Completed art work with natural fibres/materials must sit in a freezer for 1-2 weeks to kill any bugs that may reside in the natural materials -or- light mist with bug spray prior to wrapping in plastic for 2-3 weeks to aid in killing any unwanted pests

    • 7. JUDGING PROCESS

      7.1 All submissions will be judged based on the artworks and statements provided.

      a. Three judges will select the works on merit

      b. Each judge will score entries independently.

      c. Collated scores determine which works are selected for exhibition.

      NOTE: Judges are not given the names of entrants; submissions are identified by entry number.

      7.2 All artists will be informed of the outcomes of the judging via email / mobile phone. Finalists will receive an email and text message with further instructions.

      7.3 Final judging will be carried out following the installation of selected works. Final judging determines the award winners. Artist names will remain anonymous for judging.

      7.4 Award winners will be informed by phone/email and are required to attend the award opening night to receive their award

    • 8. MEDIA AND PUBLICITY

      8.1 We may use images provided by entrants (with credit/attribution) in Rangatahi Emerging Artists related media outputs.

      8.2 Images of works may be taken in the gallery space, and circulated to promote the exhibition in print and on digital sites/social media (with credit/attribution), including Te Tohu o te Ora o Ngāti Awa website.

      8.3 Finalists and Award winners may be contacted for media purposes to provide additional material such as statements or imagery

      9.1 All works are available for Auction 

      9.2 Auctioned works will remain on loan to Te Tohu o te Ora of Ngati Awa for the duration of the Exhibition.

      9.3 Payment for Sold works will be settled on Auction night.

      9.4 The Purchaser will deposit the Funds directly into the Artists account.

      a. This will be a direct bank transaction between the Purchaser and the Artist.

      b. Artist will be required to supply a bank account number, this will be kept confidential

      c. The transaction will be verified by Te Tohu o Te Ora o Ngati Awa Finance Team

      9.5 Te Tohu o te Ora o Ngati Awa Finance Team will record and confirm all payments to the Artists on the night. We do not accept cash transactions.

    Names, Titles, Description of Work and Artists Statement will be used in promotional material (See 8. MEDIA and PUBLICITY in T&C's). Bank account information will be erased at the conclusion of the exhibition and all other personal information will remain confidential .
