Each of the below has a different path and set of steps that MUST be completed through the Virginia Office of EMS. Below is a listing of each pathway and a link to each, ensuring you have taken the necessary steps for your specific need.
Challenge - Upon the completion of all prerequisites, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), Physician Associates (PAs), and Military Corpsmen are eligible to take the EMT exam. Follow this link and choose the box that says "I am an RN, LPN, NP, PA, MD, DO or U.S. Military-Trained Medical Personnel."
Legal Recognition - An individual possessing up-to-date EMS certifications from ANY state or U.S. territory who seeks certification specifically at the EMT level in Virginia. Follow this link and choose the box that says "I hold a certification from another state."
Reciprocity - An individual possessing a current National Registry certification who seeks certification specifically at the EMT level in Virginia. Follow this link and choose the box that says "I hold a National Registry certification."
Reentry - A span of two years during which a provider, whose certification in Virginia has expired, can fulfill any outstanding continuing education requirements and undergo testing to restore their certification. Virginia EMS providers who hold an NREMT certification but whose Virginia EMT Cert has expired MUST NOT APPLY for reciprocity and should choose this pathway.
