P409 Exiting and Entering an Elevated Aerial Work Platform
  • EXITING AND ENTERING AN ELEVATED AERIAL WORK PLATFORM PROCEDURE

    Aerial Work Platforms Procedure HSEOP-26-02
  • Purpose This procedure will outline the steps to follow when exiting/entering an Aerial Work Platform on a PCL project. Scope This procedure applies to all PCL projects. Responsibilities It will be the responsibility of PCL's project management to verify that they have Aerial Work Platform HSE operating procedures in place and that all personnel are trained and fully qualified to operate this type of equipment.

A Permit for Exiting/Entering Aerial Work Platform must be completed and submitted to project management prior to use for approval, using the form below. The Permit for Exiting/Entering Aerial Work Platform is valid only for the duration of the shift for which it was issued. Completion of a Job Hazard Analysis, PSI, and rescue plan is required prior to the start of work. The AWP must be operated in accordance with all restrictions, instructions, and warnings in the operator's manual and decals, and the responsibilities and safety manuals contained on the machine. The operators must have current AWP and fall-protection training and complete all required inspections before using the machine. Position the platform so the entry gate is no more than 12 inches (30 cm) away from an adjacent structure onto which the operator will move. Shut down the machine once correctly positioned; DO NOT exit or enter the platform with the AWP running. Use of full-body harness and lanyards is required that allow for 100% tie-off when exiting or entering the AWP. Operators must attach a lanyard to an approved adjacent structure anchorage before detaching the primary lanyard from the platform anchor. The lanyard attached to the platform must be detached before exiting the platform. When entering the platform, achieve 100% tie-off by attaching one lanyard to the platform anchor, before disconnecting the other lanyard from the adjacent structure anchor. The AWP must be on firm level ground capable of supporting its full weight. Operators must enter and exit through the sliding mid-rail entry or gate provided. Operators must not climb on platform guardrails to enter or exit the platform.
