About Leslie de Graaf, LMHC, LPC, CRC, EMDR Consultant- In-Training
I am an EMDRIA Approved Consultant-In-Training. This means that while I am providing you with EMDR consultation, I am receiving EMDR Consultation OF Consultation from an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Consultant. I am receiving EMDR consultation of consultation from Jen Savage, MA, LPC, EMDR Certified Therapist, EMDR Consultant, and EMDR Trainer from Beyond Healing, co-host of the podcast 'Notice That,' in order to accrue EMDR requirements for eventually becoming recognized as an EMDRIA Approved Consultant myself.
PLEASE NOTE: As an EMDRIA Approved Consultant In Training (CIT) I can provide you with 15 of your required 20 consultation hours required for EMDR Certification through EMDRIA. If you are seeing me for EMDR Certification consultation hours, please remember that once our 15 hours of consultation are completed, you will need to obtain the last 5 hours from an EMDRIA Approved Consultant. It is your responsibility to track when you have reached your MAXIMUM allowable hours with a CIT. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. Please visit EMDRIA at www.emdria.org for further information on these requirements.
NOTE ON GROUP HOURS TOWARDS CERTIFICATION:
Out of the 20 total consultation hours required for EMDR certification, ONLY 10 can be group. It is your responsibility to track how many hours you have obtained in group and to determine when you have reached your allowable amount. Please visit EMDRIA at www.emdria.org for further information on these requirements.
For this group with four consultees, the meeting time will be 120 minutes
and each consultee will spend 30 minutes presenting their case for consultation. This means each consultee will receive 30 minutes of individual consultation and 90 minutes of group consultation per meeting. At the completion of group consultation (after 5 months), each consultee will have earned a total of 1.5 hours for individual consultation and 7.5 group hours. *This leaves 2.5 hrs allowable for additional group hours and 8.5 hours still needed for individual consultation*
What is required by EMDRIA to be displayed during certification consultation?
You are required to show me, your Consultant In Training, that you can adhere to the EMDR 8 Phase, 3-prong standard protocol in our time together. Additionally, when you do sway from the standard protocol you must display reasoning that is aligned with EMDRIA standards. I, Leslie de Graaf, only work with clinicians for certification who are fully trained in an EMDRIA approved basic training. If your training was EMDRIA approved, this means that the way you were trained and the materials you were given ARE aligned with the 8 phase, 3 prong standard EMDR protocol.
What the Consultee (you) can expect:
1. I require work samples of all 8 Phases and 3 Prongs of the standard EMDR therapy, and evidence of correcting any concerns, along with proof that you have also completed any remaining hours outside of our accrued hours together before writing a recommendation letter for EMDRIA Certification
2. You are required to participate in all groups to get credit, meaning you must give feedback, express thoughts, ask questions, even if you are not presenting a case that day.
3. You will be required to present a case twice throughout our 8 week consultation series (see case presentation form) Ideally, when at all possible, you will have audio or video to go along with this case presentation.
4. I encourage you to seek consultation from other consultants if they have a specialty area that fits your needs. Please notify me if additional consultants are utilized for hours towards EMDRIA Certification. The guidance provided to you will be enhanced if you grant both consultants/CITs permission to speak to each other.
5. I will document and track our time spent in consultation. I will retain documentation of our consultation together for a five-year period from the date our work together concludes. I will write a letter of recommendation or written verification if you have acquired the skills and knowledge base to be Certified and demonstrate this. If the skills and knowledge have not been demonstrated, I can provide written documentation of the time spent in consultation, the skills and knowledge acquired and the areas still needing improvement. We will discuss issues as they arise especially if you are having difficulty.
6. I will keep abreast of current trends and changes happening with EMDR and trauma treatment. I will provide consultees with new information and accommodate your needs as long as it stays within the scope of my knowledge. I will refer to other consultants if your needs are beyond my scope.
7. I will make best efforts to provide a safe and supportive learning environment. Any concerns about this, when shared with me, will be addressed with you in private.
8. Makeups are not included for missed groups. You may schedule an individual consultation with me for an additional fee if you are unable to make any of these meetings.
9. You are expected to come prepared to present case material, complete with notes on that case.
10. Do not include any information that will identify the case you are presenting on materials you share with me.
11. You are expected to practice within the ethical guidelines of both your license and professional associations. EMDRIA states that if there is no professional association, then the APA’s code of ethics will be the standard for all EMDRIA members. It is your responsibility to stay current on both the laws and ethics applicable to them.
For EMDRIA Certification:
· Examples of your clinical work are essential to the consultation process. You will need to come prepared with near-verbatim transcripts or video or audio recordings of your client sessions on the weeks that you present. You will need to obtain the necessary releases from clients. The verbatim/video/audio must include your words and interventions.
· You will need to demonstrate proficiency and fidelity to the standard EMDR therapy and also an awareness of situations in which modifications to standard EMDR therapy are necessary in order to safely and effectively treat the client. This may include reading and training outside of consultation.
· Consultation does not substitute for foundational psychotherapy skills. Should concerns in this area become evident, I may require that these concerns be remedied prior to writing a recommendation for Certification.
· Please note consultation hours are just one of the many requirements of Certification. See EMDRIA.org for the rest of the requirements.
· You will be required to present cases demonstrating phases 1-8, past present and future. I will share a case presentation form with you prior to our first meeting.
About Leslie de Graaf's EMDR and Psychotherapeutic Area of Focus
I am a psychotherapist specializing in counseling women with anxiety, depression, trauma, and perinatal issues. My approach to counseling is rooted in family systems and exploring how upbringing, early relationships, and past trauma may be impacting my clients' lives in the present. I want to understand what happened in order to understand how I can help. I look at issues through a trauma-informed lens and I work to support women as they process the memories that are burdening to them. I use EMDR therapy for the treatment of trauma-related mental health symptoms and disorders. I own my own solo private practice in Florida, where my caseload consists of adult women, ages 25-70, with complex trauma histories that often involve childhood sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and neglect. The diagnoses I typically work with include anxiety, depression, Complex PTSD, PTSD, and Dissociative Disorders. When pursuing advanced trainings in EMDR and psychotherapy in general, areas I focus on typically revolve around the topics of attachment, ego state theory, complex trauma, and neurobiology. My style of consultation is rooted in a humanistic, strengths-based, compassionate, and trauma-informed approach; through these approaches, I offer direct and honest feedback and education.
