In response to the June 29th weather event, the Emergency Support Function (ESF) #8 group, medical and public health services, is working to better our response when prolonged power outages occur. Our goal is to better our response to those with high-risk medical needs. First, we want to express our gratitude to each and every community member for your understanding and patience during these outages. While we cannot completely eliminate the possibility of disruptions, we can certainly be proactive in preparing ourselves and our communities.
Here are some steps we can take as a community to enhance our resilience during power outages:
1. Stay informed!! Local resources include KAAN radio, NTA EMS Rescue Facebook page, Harrison County Health Department Facebook page, Farmer’s Bank textcaster (sign up on their website), Harrison County Community Hospital Facebook page, etc.
2. Emergency Preparedness: Create an emergency kit with essential supplies- flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food & drinking water, portable oxygen tanks, extra batteries for medical equipment.
3. Support One Another: Let’s look out for our neighbors, especially those who may need additional assistance during outages.
4. Self-Report High-Risk Medical Needs: The ESF #8 group is working to create a secured data sheet to help us contact those that require power for life sustaining medical equipment. This will allow us to provide immediate assistance during an extended power outage.

This information will be kept in a secured format at the Harrison County Health Department, and will only be shared with other emergency personnel of the county if an extended power outage is expected. We will contact individuals on the list every 6 months for updates/changes/deletions.
