  • The European Organisation of Prison and Correctional Services (EuroPris) is organising a Real Estate and Logistics Workshop with the theme Sustainability in prisons.

    Join us in September 2024 to discover how to be Lean, Mean and Green as we find out how to operate Prisons sustainably, save money and navigate the path to net zero.

    The first EuroPris Sustainability Workshop will take place in the historic city of York, England and will include a site visit to the UK’s first Net Zero Prison (full electric prison). The Workshop will be a full two-day event and is hosted by UK Ministry of Justice. The Workshop is exclusively for the Public Sector, Academics and NGO’s.

    The program will include practical examples of some of the tremendous progress that is occurring across Europe to advance the Sustainability credentials of our Prisons, deal with Climate change, reduce energy consumption, save money, decarbonize and navigate the path to net zero.

  • Topics of Interest for the Call for Papers include:

    • The journey to achieving a Net Zero building – what to consider when planning a net zero building (the what, why's and how's of designing a net zero solution) and the challenges, considerations and technologies that need to be considered
    • Retro-fitting existing buildings to save energy and deal with Climate change – measures taken to improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings and decarbonise
    • Adapting Buildings for a warming climate – how to adapt buildings to control overheating
    • Renewable Energy – The generation of renewable energy from Solar and Wind at our Prisons
    • Energy Management – Innovative methods to reduce consumption, improve the management of energy and save money across the Prison estate 
    • Developing a long-term business plan/solutions to decarbonise an existing estate
    • Water Management – the measures being taken to conserve water and limit water leakage
    • Waste Management – measures to recycle, reduce waste and create effective opportunities for inmates
    • Bio-Diversity – measures being taken to address the loss of habitat and conserve the diversity of species at our Prisons
    • Electric Vehicles – the measures being taken to electrify Prison fleets and introduce EV charging points (both at existing and new Prisons) and the adoption of payment policies to cover the cost of charging private vehicles
    • Training Programmes on Sustainability Awareness delivered for Staff and/or Inmates

    Abstracts should be in English, with a maximum of 300 words. Your written proposal should include your experience / background and an explanation of the nature of your proposed contribution/ input at the workshop.
