In these slides, we call the job, project, goal or duty that you need or want to do, your "Task."

  • 1. Create a Motivational Movie

Try different mental movies until you find one that works for you. For example, watch yourself...

    1. Suddenly feeling motivated and completing all of your tasks.
    2. Filling an imaginary "energy tank" and then jumping into your task.
    3. Enjoying the benefits from completing the task.
  • 2. Take a Baby Step

Instead of facing the entire task, break it down into smaller and smaller steps until you feel motivated.  Examples:

    1. Task: Get out of debt. Baby step: Add $10 to your credit card payment.
    2. Task: Build a beautiful website. Baby step: Pick five websites for inspiration.
    3. Task: Sell your service to 10 people. Baby step: Schedule one lunch.
  • 3. Get Creative

Instead of barely surviving or suffering through your task, invent something!  Examples:

    1. Create a new and brilliant way to do your task.
    2. Create a new benefit for you or others to enjoy.
    3. Create more income, more joy, happier relationships, a better service or product.
  • 4. Boost Your Willingness

If you are unwilling to do a task, answer these questions.

    1. Which part of this task are you unwilling to do?
    2. Can you delegate, delay or dump that part of the task?
    3. If not, how can you be somewhat willing to do this part of the task?
    4. How can you become 100% willing to do the entire task?
  • 5. Make the Task into a Game

    1. Think about your favorite sport or game.
    2. Insert your task into this game. Sketch out the same ingredients.
    3. For example, you love soccer. So you show the goal up there. The opponents are here. Your teammates are here. This is the plan.
    4. Blow an imaginary whistle and play!

    6. Be Grateful For Your Task

What about your task are you glad about? Examples:

    1. You hate doing your taxes ... but you love the money you are making.
    2. You wish you didn't need to clean your house ... but happy you have a nice home.
    3. You feel overloaded at work ... but glad you have an important job.
  • 7. Coach Yourself

Pretend you are a tough sports coach. What would you say to a player like you?

    1. “Hey! Wake up! Make it go right!”
    2. “What are you doing? How're you gonna win by lying in bed?”
    3. “Stop being a wimp! Suck it up! You're tough, okay? So get going!”
  •

    8. Simplify

You can lose your motivation if your task gets complicated. You might get fired up if you can make the task simpler. Ask yourself ...

    1. What about this task might actually be unncessary?
    2. How can I simplify a complicated part of this task?
    3. If I had to do this task very, very quickly, what could I skip?

  • 9. Take Better Control with Start, Change, Stop

    1. Start: What about this task can you start? What might be exciting to start?
    2. Change: What about this task can you change? What change could be exciting?
    3. Stop: What about this task can you stop? What would be exciting to stop?
  • 10. Review Your Reasons

    1. List reasons why you CAN'T complete the task.
    2. Delete the list or tear the paper into tiny pieces.
    3. List the reasons why you CAN complete the task.
    4. Place this list where you will constantly see it. For example, post it on a wall or put it into your pocket.
