RSVP: "Uniting for Justice: Bridging International & National Strategies"
The Education Justice Project's Policy & Research Division is hosting a 4-part panel discussion series during the 2023-24 academic year that brings together international and national organizations working in the areas of prison monitoring, juvenile justice, legal accessibility/access to justice, and drug policy reform in the hopes of disseminating best practices and bolstering our collective efforts. The series hopes to expand our understanding of how legislative, legal, and community action can spur and be used toward social justice.
September 27, 2023 @ 12:00p CT: Panel on the Ramifications of the War on Drugs & Drug Policy Reform
The first panel in the series will bring together the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Illinois, Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) International, and Explore Maryland Cannabis to discuss the ramifications of the War on Drugs as well as the importance of advocating for drug policies that decriminalize, legalize, and support rather than punish. Panelists will include ACLU of IL Criminal Justice Attorney Ben Ruddell, SSDP International Executive Director Charity Monareng, and Explore Maryland Cannabis CEO Keisha Reed. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions after the panel discussion!
November 29, 2023 @ 12:00p CT: Panel on Prison Monitoring & Oversight
The second panel in the series will bring together the John Howard Association of Illinois and prison oversight practitioners that have worked across the globe to discuss prison monitoring practices and strategies for increasing transparency and accountability in correctional systems. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions after the panel discussion!
January 31, 2024 @ 12:00p CT: Panel on Juvenile Justice
The third panel in the series will bring together the Juvenile Justice Initiative (JJI) and Juvenile Justice Advocates International to discuss the importance of progressive approaches in working with and supporting system-impacted youth as opposed to punishing. Panelists include JJI Founder and Treasurer Elizabeth Clarke and JJA Executive Director Douglas Keillor. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions after the panel discussion!
March 27, 2024 @ 12:00p CT: Panel on Access to Justice
The fourth and final panel in the series will bring together the Illinois Prison Project and Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just, and Inclusive Societies to discuss the importance of legal accessibility, access to justice, and legal empowerment for communities in the pursuit of social justice. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions after the panel discussion!
