Make your own Farmers Market Basket with Martha Bird! In this basketry class, you’ll learn how to weave rattan reed into a Farmers Market Basket by building on a variety of techniques including: Stop and Start weaving; Cut and Tuck; Rim Lashing, and how to incorporate a Williamsburg handle.
The square-base pattern was specifically chosen to encourage supporting your local farmers markets. The size of your final basket will measure: 14 ½ x 13 ½ x 13 ½ inches.
Beginners welcome. Hand coordination and dexterity is recommended. Extra material is provided for participants to create a second small basket.
Class Dates: October 21 & 22, 2023
- Saturday - 10/21
- 9am-12pm - Weaving the base
- 1pm-5pm - Weaving the sides
- Sunday - 10/22
- 1pm-5pm - Weaving the rim
Registration: $85 per student. (The true cost of this basketry class is $175, however, thanks to the support of grant funds, we are able to offer this class at a reduced/subsidized rate.)
Location: Class will take place in the Classroom located in the lower level at Kaddatz Galleries (111 W. Lincoln Ave. Fergus Falls, MN 56537).
About your instructor: Martha Bird is an exhibiting artist, willow sculptor, nurse, and mental health advocate. She uses basketry techniques as a starting point to create expansive conceptual forms that both carry forward the traditional craft and challenge its utilitarian assumptions.
