Since 2007, APALI has recruited annual cohorts of community leaders and advocates for training in an engaging Civic Leadership Program (CLP) and participating in an impactful alumni network for advancing their civic journeys to build a stronger community.
APALI alumni comprise a large percentage of the leadership pipeline for Asian American Pacific Islander, Chicanx/Latinx, and under-represented communities.
The successful CLP applicant will be an experienced leader, executive, program manager, elected or appointed official, community activist, legislative staff, or the equivalent. Applicants with some background in government, nonprofits, education, law, or corporate/business are preferred.
APALI's Civic Leadership Program consists of 12 required virtual sessions which will be facilitated by three experienced program leaders. The CLP include the following features:
- Holistic approach to leadership development emphasizing personal and community well-being.
- Community building and allyship for an inclusive cohort with diverse personal experience related to race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, socioeconomic to leverage engaging and supportive conversations.
- Curriculum that seeks to broaden perspectives on community, representation, and policy.
- Extensive alumni engagement as leaders and expert speakers, workshop facilitators, with many opportunities to develop personal networks.
- Learning activities to develop personal insights and vision, including reading reflections, personal project, and personal roadmap.
Optional but encouraged in-person gathering/training include:
- Saturday, Feb. 3, 3-5p: CLP 2024 Cohort Meet-Up.
- Saturday, March 2, 9a - 4p: Candidates & Campaign Training.
- Saturday, March 30, 10a - 2p: Alumni Lunch & CLP Celebration

PROGRAM LEADERS In addition to extensive executive experience in nonprofit, academic, and legal sectors, Dr. Michael Chang, Mayra Cruz, and Dennis Chiu have all served as elected public officials with over 40 years of combined experience as former mayor, education board president, and vice chair of a major health district governing board respectively.
PAYMENTS
After November 19, 2023 successful applicants will receive a congratulatory email with payment notification. Payment for CLP 2024 participants is comprised of two parts: (1) an APALI Program Fee and (2) De Anza College Tuition for a special online course.
APALI Program Fee:
$450 for sponsoring organizations/employers (per participant).
$250 for individuals paying for their own participation.
$150 for participants with annual incomes below $78,000.
De Anza College Tuition:
CLP participants have to apply for De Anza College admission and be enrolled in ENTH 50 Civic Leadership for Community Empowerment (APALI). Regular CA resident tuition is approximately $124 with opt out optional fees.
