Our culture celebrates high school graduation in many wonderful ways, but rarely do we pause to prayerfully reflect on and mark as holy and sacred this moment of transition into early adulthood. Sacred Pause provides a time, place, and a unique and intimate way for families to share this sacred moment together before the crunch of exams, graduation gatherings, and parties.
Who can participate? Seniors, parents extended family, and seniors’ friends. All are invited and welcome.
Sacred Pause begins with a relaxed social gathering in the café. Everyone brings a light hors d'oeuvres to share. It's time for reconnecting with old and new friends alike. At about 6:30, we will regather outside into the courtyard for an intimate service of worship and Holy Eucharist. In the event of rain, the service proceeds in the covered breezeway between the church and parish hall.
A central feature of Sacred Pause, which began in 2021, is offering private prayers, composed in advance by all participants, brought to the event in sealed envelopes. A month prior to the service, seniors and parents each receive guidelines that propt reflection on the meaning of this moment as they compose meaningful, personal prayers (about hopes, concerns, gratitude for people and acomplishments) written in very plain, very direct language addressed to God. The sealed prayers are the offering at the service, placed on the altar alongside the bread and wine for consecration. After sharing Holy Communion, the priest places all the consecrated prayers into an open fire, and as the prayers burn, everyone present adds incense to the flames.
Registrants will receive the prayer guidelines the first week in April, using the emails provided on the piror page.
