Black Heritage Pheasant Hunt at Hastings Island Hunting Preserve

This pheasant hunt is particularly geared toward new hunters, so if you're really not sure what you're doing yet, or you've never hunted before, this event is for YOU!

It includes:

Light breakfast (coffee and pastries)
A trap shoot to warm up for the hunt (with instructors to help new shooters)
A hunt for up to three pheasants, with volunteer dog handlers/guides
Bird cleaning
Serious swag

Required attire includes sturdy pants (jeans are fine), hiking boots sufficient for walking through wet grass and maybe mud on choppy ground, and a blaze orange hat, which can be purchased at hook-n-bullet stores. You must have a valid hunting license and upland validation in your possession to hunt. If you're not licensed yet, keep in mind that you MUST complete Hunter Education to qualify for a license.

Meetup time is 7 a.m. the day of the hunt, which gives you time to sign waivers, sign in, get a field permit, buy ammunition, eat and drink coffee, and get to know your fellow hunters.

Trap shoot will be preceded by safety instruction - if you are new, we're going to tell you how to stay safe, as well as what we'll do to keep you safe.

Hunters will shoot in pairs (unless they want a larger group of their own choosing).

Ammunition is NOT included but can be purchased on site - keep in mind that you must be able to pass a background check to make the purchase, and if you have questions about that, email Holly at heyserphoto@gmail.com.

Have you completed hunter education? You need to complete hunter education to get a hunting license. It can be done online and takes about ten hours.

Do you have a hunting license and an upland validation? You will need both for this hunt. They can be purchased online, but you must allow several weeks for delivery. They can also be purchased in many "hook and bullet" stores.

Do you have access to a shotgun for this hunt? If not, you need to be able to borrow one.

Have you ever fired a shotgun at a moving target before (trap, skeet, clays, birds)?

Please list the most important rules for firearm safety (If you don't know, you will learn this in hunter ed.)

Please indicate what type of hunting experience you have

Do you have your own bird-hunting dog, or will you need a volunteer dog handler and dog?

If you plan to shoot trap, can you bring your own target rounds (1-2 boxes of lead or steel shot size 7.5 - 9), or will you need to buy ammo on site? (You will have to pass a background check.)

Do you have your own hunting ammunition (1-2 boxes of non-toxic rounds with a shot size of 4 or 5), or will you need to buy hunting ammo on site? (You will have to pass a background check.)
