Please remind all staff and students that are on the field trip to have up-to-date emergency contact details in Web Kiosk or E-vision. Trip leader should obtain Next of Kin details from members of the team under Volunteer, Visiting Scientist and Sojourn categories and email them to the Boat Officer to be stored in Vault.
If this boat is being booked for class teaching, please attach the class list upon submission.

It is important that all members of the field team have been inducted on the vessel that is in use by the skipper.
All boats have an in-depth boat specific safety plan found in the MTOP (Maritime Transport Operator Plan There is an up-to-date copy of this on all boats at all times. This plan is reviewed annually and whenever an issue is raised.

Most hazards encountered during regular boat work have been identified, documented and assessed in each vessel's MTOP. Please add any trip specific hazards that are not covered in the MTOP (there may be none)
Emergencies at Sea
Distress, urgency, and safety calls will be the skipper's responsibility to use all available means to manage the emergency and gain assistance. There are comprehensive guides and procedures for managing emergencies at sea found in each vessels Maritime Transport Operator Plan MTOP
When in grave or imminent danger:
1. Ensure the Captain is aware (follow all instructions from the skipper)
2. Activate EPRB (ensure you keep this on your person)
3. Distress call on VHF 16; SSBV 2182, 4125, 6216, 8291, 12290, 16420

Safety Equipment
All safety equipment required by Maritime law is located on all vessels at all times and is kept current tosurvey requirements (for a full itemized list please refer to the vessel's MTOP).This includes, but is not limited to, VHF Radio, Life Jacket's, EPIRB, Flares and smoke.
Contacting the Boat
Urgent evacuations from sea (usually by helicopter) will be coordinated through Rescue Coordination Center New Zealand (RCCNZ RCCNZ will co-ordinate any assistance from other vessels in proximity.
It is important to note that the University has no liability or insurance to cover evacuation of personnel in remote places.

Where possible, boat use should be booked for a normal working week Monday-Friday (and not over public holidays).
Overtime hours (>7.5hrs per day) and weekend work may incur overtime which will be additional to the standard hourly vessel charges. This includes time spent launching, retrieving, and washing the boat.
