BUDDY CAMPER PROTOCOLS
Definition: Buddy Campers are individuals under the age of 18, but are at least 15 years of age who, because of their age, are not allowed by RFKC Policy to be responsible for the supervision of RFKC Campers. In some instances, 18 and 19 year olds may serve as Buddy Campers. Because they are adults, they would have a background check and be able to participate in the two-deep rule, and would fill out a full application.
Camp Leadership will not expect Buddy Campers to be adults, but will expect them to be mature teens.
Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Dean of Men or Dean of Women, the Buddy Camper may provide support to staff or Big Campers as assigned. The following is a possible list of responsibilities.
- Assistance in activity centers, Breakfast Club, Chapel, drama, music, set-up, and take down, Birthday Party, evening activities, and sports.
- Shadowing a Big Camper during the camp week, including sleeping in the cabins with the Big Campers and their Campers, and getting assistance from RFKC Camp Leadership or the nurse if the Big Camper is unable to leave the campers.
Expectations:
Buddy Campers will:
- Adhere completely to the policies and procedures as defined during RFKC mandatory training.
- Be expected to provide an example to the campers through their demeanor and behavior by not complaining about assignments or providing criticism of other Buddy Campers, Big Campers, Staff, or Campers, at any time. Should the Buddy Camper have an issue with another person, they will address that problem with the person or the individual that is responsible for the assignment. Any issues that cannot be resolved directly will be taken directly to the Dean of Men or Dean of Women for assistance. These discussions will be held out of earshot and/or sight of Campers.
We are following the biblical principle defined in Matthew 18:15. When having a problem with your brother, you take it to that brother; if he does not listen, then two others with you and explain the problem again; if he still does not listen, take the problem to the Elders (RFKC Leadership).
- Be courteous and helpful, and demonstrate God’s Love to the best of their ability when assisting Big Campers, Staff, or Campers.
- Demonstrate a mature attitude and a servant’s heart.
- Get adequate rest by maintaining curfew. No participating in late night escapades, such as games, long walks, etc. During night relief, the Buddy Campers may participate in discussions and activities in the staff lounge, but must return to the cabin when night relief is over.
- Be there for the Campers. This week at camp is for the Campers, and all RFKC staff is expected to concentrate on them, rather than on themselves. Camp is not a social time for Buddy Campers to hang out with each other. During times assigned to the Campers, the Buddy Campers are expected to be with their campers and participating in scheduled activities at all times.
- Be a helper to the Big Campers whenever possible.
- HAVE FUN!!!
Restrictions:
Buddy Campers will:
- Never be placed in direct charge of campers without direct and continuous adult visual supervision.
- At all times adhere to the “Two Deep Rule”
- Never be alone with Campers, under ANY circumstance
- Not exchange phone numbers, addresses, emails, Facebook info, or any other contact information with any Camper.
- Maintain confidentiality about adult or child stories that occur at camp, or are heard at camp. After camp, significant stories may be shared, but names may never be used in order to protect confidentiality. If a Buddy Camper is told a story that they feel is detrimental to the health or wellbeing of a Camper, they are to discuss that information with the Dean of Men or Dean of Women, or either Camp Director.
- Not use cell phones at camp. If an emergency occurs and there is need for communication outside of camp, the Dean of Men or Dean of Women will make the necessary arrangements. Parents/Legal Guardians of the Buddy Campers will be given the number of the camp in case of emergency.
- Remain in common areas of the camp, and within sight of Camp Staff or Big Campers, unless granted permission by the Dean of Men or Dean of Women to be otherwise.
- Maintain an absolute curfew of 10:30pm.
