The Honorable {senator}
RE: Please Pass NJ Senate Bill S.2710 – New Jersey Sickle Cell Center Pilot Program
Dear {senator_greeting}:
My name is {firstAndlast}. l reside in {District}.
I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the impact Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) has on our communities . SCD is a hereditary and life-threatening disease that afflicts an estimated 100,000 people in the United States-mostly in the black and brown communities. New Jersey has one of the largest populations of sickle patients, who suffer daily from the painful and psychological effects of the disease. New Jersey ranks among the top ten states, with over 4000 people diagnosed with SCD living here.
I am also writing in support of New Jersey Senate Bill S.2710 . The New Jersey Assembly unanimously passed this important legislation (A.4052) on June 30, 2023. Bill S.2710 would establish a sickle cell center pilot program housed at federally-qualified healthcare centers (FQHCs) in Trenton, Newark, Plainfield, Camden, Jersey City and Paterson, creating a robust and well-sourced regional system of specialty care units. These services are desperately needed and long over-due for those battling this devastating disease.
Members of our community who suffer with SCD, encounter barriers to obtaining quality health care, which significantly impacts their quality of life. Senate Bill S.2710 provides an essential first step to breaking down the barriers of inadequate treatment needed in the care of patients suffering from SCD.
Over the years, much has been accomplished, but there is still much more important work to be done. Again, I strongly urge you and other members of the New Jersey Senate, to match the New Jersey Assembly by passing Bill S.2710.
Thank you for your support!
Respectfully,
