  • SA Country have a number of different competitions that require referees to attend and represent SA Country each year. 

    • Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup (Country Cup) - January
    • Under 20 National Championships - February
    • Ivor Burge National Championships - Feburary
    • Under 18 National Championships - April 
    • Kevin Coombs Cup (Wheelchair) - April 
    • Under 16 National Championships - July 
    • Under 14 Club Nationals - September 
    • Under 18 Club Nationals - September
    • Australian Schools Championships - November

    The Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup (Country Cup)

    Teams from Country Victoria, Country NSW, Tasmania, SA Country and New Zealand come to compete in Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 competitions, these competitions are fully timed and run in a similar fashion to National Championships.

    SA Country send 12+ referees to Albury/ Wodonga to attend the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup for a week in January, referees get selected and are sent to referee the age group they are nominated and receive referee coaching on all games.

    Referees wanting to express interest in attending Country Cup must officiate or referee coach at all SA Country Championships (U18s - December 2024, Seniors January 2025 & JCCs March 2025)

    Referees and referee coaches may encounter some out of pocket expences for Country Cup, all officials are expected to get themsleves to and from Albury, each will be given a $150 once off payment to go towards your travel costs. 

    All officials will be required to pay $90* to the Referee Coordinator (Alan Garraway) this pays for the officials meals and outings for the week. Including bowling night where each state goes against each other in the annual 10 pin bowling competition.

    Referees must be 16 years of age to attend this tournament 

    Under 20 National Championships 

    Basketball Australia host the Under 20 National Championships each year, these Championships can be held in any state in Australia. SA Country does not send a team to the Under 20s as Basketball SA & SA Country combine to create 1 team in each gender to send.

    These Championships will be held in Ballarat, VIC in 2025.

    It is preferred that referees wanting to express inerest in attending this have been to Under 18 Nationals previously and hold a current accreditation of Level 3 or higher and be over the age of 18.

    Travel costs will be arranged by Basketball Australia and covered by each state.

    Under 18 National Championships 

    Basketball Australia host the Under 18 National Championships each year, these Championships can be held in any state in Australia.

    These Championships will be held in Brisbane, QLD in 2025.

    It is preferred that referees wanting to express inerest in attending this have been to Under 16 Nationals previously and hold a current Level 2 or higher accreditation.

    Travel costs will be arranged by Basketball Australia and covered by each state.

    Under 16 National Championships 

    Basketball Australia host the Under 16 National Championships each year, these Championships can be held in any state in Australia. 

    Venue and state for the 2025 Championships are yet to be announced by Basketball Australia.

    It is preferred that referees wanting to express inerest in attending this have been to Under 14 Club Nationals previously and hold a current level 1A or higher accrediation. 

    Travel costs will be arranged by Basketball Australia and covered by each state.

    Under 14 Club Nationals 

    Basketball Australia host the Under 14 Club National Championships each year, these Championships can be held in any state in Australia. 

    Venue and state for the 2025 Championships are yet to be announced by Basketball Australia.

    Referees wanting to attend the U14 Club Nationals must have a minimum Level 1A accreditation and have attended the The Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup (Country Cup)

    Travel costs will be arranged by Basketball Australia and covered by each state.

    Under 18 Club Nationals (NEW)

    Basketball Australia host the Under 18 Club National Championships each year, these Championships can be held in any state in Australia. 

    Venue and state for the 2025 Championships are yet to be announced by Basketball Australia.

    Referees wanting to attend the U18 Club Nationals must have a minimum Level 1A accreditation and have attended the The Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup (Country Cup) or higher.

    Travel costs will be arranged by Basketball Australia and covered by each state.

    Australian Schools Championships

    Basketball Australia host the Australian Schools Championships each year in November,  with schools from all over Australia coming to compete.

    Venue and state for the 2025 Championships are yet to be announced by Basketball Australia.

    There are 2 different levels at the Schools Championships; 

    • Championship level - Referees must be a minimum of Level 1 referee to attend this with 3PO experience
    • Division 1 (Zebra) - This is a development tournament for Level 1B and above referees 

    Referees must be at least 16 years of age to attend this tournament.

    Travel costs will be arranged by Basketball Australia and covered by each state.

    Ivor Burge National Championships 

    Basketball Australia host the Ivor Burge championships each year alongside the Under 20 National Championships, the Ivor Burge Championship is for athletes with an intellectual disability as per the VIRTUS classification requirements. Teams participating in these championships are representing their state.

    These Championships will be held in Ballarat, VIC in 2025.

    Referees wanting to attend the Ivor Burge National Championships must have a minimum Level 1B or higher accrediation. 

    Travel costs will be arranged by Basketball Australia and covered by each state.

    Kevin Coombs Cup (Wheelchair)

    Basketball Australia host the Kevin Coombs Cup each year across Australia alongside the U18 National Championships. The Kevin Coombs Cup is for athletes that meet the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation criteria for classification. Teams participating in these championships are representing their state.

    These Championships will be held in Brisbane, QLD in 2025.

    Travel costs will be arranged by Basketball Australia and covered by each state.

    Referees wanting to attend the Kevin Coombs Cup must have a minimum Level 1B or higher accrediation and have done a wheelchair referee course and actively be refereeing Wheelchair basketball.

    Please note there are more requirements for each of these Championships, these are currently being audited and updated and will be advertised once completed and approved by the SA Country Referee Management Sub-Committee (RMSC). 

    As a country referee you do not need to register for any national championships via BSA as Country referees are selected separtaely by the RMSC then taken to BSA Referee Working Group.
