  • Behavior Intervention Plan

    Behavior Name: Non-compliance
Operational Definition: Non-compliance is defined as hearing a directive and engaging in a non-directed task rather than beginning the steps to comply with a demand within 5 seconds of the demand being given.

    Antecedent Interventions

To prevent maladaptive behaviors, do the following:

    1) Implement First-Then Contingency: Prior to placing a demand ensure that you use a first-then contingency by stating the task to be completed to gain access to the specified reinforcer.
    2) Rephrase Demand: If the demand is non-preferred or has a history of evoking escape behavior, rephrase demand by identifying the reinforcement to be gained or other aspects of task completion that is less aversive to the client and using that information as the focal point of the demand (e.g. Let's sit down and earn more time with the iPad).
    3) Use Schedule: Ensure to use and have visible a schedule that outlines activities to be completed for a given instruction period or during the day. Provide a transition warning between activities.
    4) Modify Task Demand: If the task is difficult or an emerging skill modify task to make completion of the demand more accessible for the client to complete

    Consequence Interventions

If the behavior occurs address the behavior in the following manner:

    1) Implement Functional Communication Training: If the client is exhibiting difficulty requesting a break, assistance or access, prompt the client to functionally communicate their request for an item, activity, attention, help, location and/or cessation of an activity using the appropriate communication modality. Ensure that the proper reinforcement contingencies are in completed before the request is met. Use any visual supports that are needed to support the client in effectively making their request.
    2) Implement Differential Reinforcement of Compliance: In each interaction, implement differential reinforcement of compliance by reinforcing compliance with task demands with positive social attention (e.g. "verbal praise), a token or back-up reinforcer as it aligns with other reinforcement contingencies in place.
    3) Implement Guided Compliance: In the first 3 seconds of the non-compliant episode, implement guided compliance procedure by 1) Clearly and firmly stating the demand 2) Gesturing toward the area or item involved in the demand or model the actions involved in the demand 3) Provide physical guidance to assist the client in completing the demand. Progress to the next step within the intervention if the client does not comply within 10 seconds. Provide social praise if the client complies within 10 seconds of the demand being given during the implementation of the intervention. If the client does not comply within 10 seconds, maintain a neutral affect and continue with the procedure until the client complies with the task demand.
