• HAND HYGIENE GUIDELINES

  • WASH HANDS with either antimicrobial or non-antimicrobial soap and water:

    1. When visibly dirty
    2. When contaminated with proteinaceous material, blood, or body fluids
    3. Before eating
    4. After using the restroom

  • ROUTINELY DECONTAMINATE HANDS if they are not visibly soiled, using either an alcohol-based hand rub or an antimicrobial soap & water:

    1. Before direct patient contact
    2. Before inserting indwelling urinary catheters or other invasive devices
    3. After contact with a patient's intact skin (i.e. taking a blood pressure or pulse)
    4. After contact with body fluids or excretions, mucous membranes, non-intact skin, and wound
    dressings if hands are not visibly soiled
    5. if moving from a contaminated body site to a clean body site during patient care
    6. After contact with inanimate objects (including medical equipment) in the immediate vicinity of the
    patient
    7. After removing gloves

  • Hand Hygiene Procedure


    Soap and water:

    • Wet hands with water (avoid hot water to reduce the risk of dermatitis)
    • Apply amount of product recommended by the manufacturer to the hands
    • Rub hands together vigorously for at least 20 seconds, covering all surfaces of the hands and
    • fingers.Rinse hands with water and dry thoroughly with a disposable towel
    • Use towel to turn off the faucet

    Alcohol based hand rub:

    • Apply to palm of one hand and rub hands together, covering all surfaces of hands and fingers, until
      hands are dry. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the amount to use.
