  • COACH PRACTICAL TRAINING GUIDE

Use this framework to guide all of your coach practicals
  • Follow these guidelines/principles when conducting a new coach practical. But remember... It's about progress, not perfection...

Time estimates are included for each block. Complete as many blocks as you can in the time allotted then pick up where you left off at the next practical session.

     PRACTICAL TRAINING OBJECTIVES:

    1. Prepare for field training

    2. Practice portions of class that don't require live classes (Aff/S.G., course demos, course setups, parent education, & awards)

    3. Guage coach superpowers & opportunities for growth

For each block follow this order:

    1. Leadership demonstrates the block exactly as they want the coach to perform (meaning if they were to copy you exactly it would be satisfactory to move on)

    2. Review AAT: The AAT for each block is written out for you to reference. These should be the points you reinforce after your demo:

    • Alignment = Where to be and when to be there
    • Assignment = Know what to do
    • Technique = How to do it (Use Coach DNA traits)

    3. Coach candidate performs the block

    Providing Feedback:

    1. Feedback should reinforce the AAT you reviewed
    2. Provide feedback early and often. Then give them an opportunity to apply the feedback
    3. Praise passionately when they apply feedback and or show progress
    4. Move on when they are comfortable and confident to run during live class field training

    How to Use this Guide:

Study the AAT for each block before the practical to ensure you know what points to reinforce after your demo. Reference it during breaks or downtime as you progress.

Do NOT read off of this when you're running the practical. We need to model the behavior we are looking to elicit from our coaches which is trusting the script and talking TO them not just reading words off a form at them.

    Tracking Progress & Feedback:

    • At the end of the practical form identify their superpowers and opportunities for growth going into field training and live class evaluations

This form can be saved at any point and resumed at the next practical session. You will receive an email with a link to resume this form when you save and exit the form.

Upon submission, you will receive a .pdf copy of this form

The coach will receive a copy of this form in the email you entered upon submission

  • COACH FIELD TRAINING GUIDE

USE THESE GUIDELINES BELOW WHEN FIELD TRAINING A NEW COACH
  • Field training should immediately follow practical training!

    FIELD TRAINING OBJECTIVES

    1. Gain confidence & comfortability leading live classes

    2. Live training on hands-on coaching, breaking the glass, & class operations

    3. Apply knowledge/skills gained from practical training

    1ST CLASS:

Leadership: On the floor, attached to the coach's hip (proximity to leadership = comfort & confidence)

Leadership Mindset: You're training a new coach, NOT coaching the class. You are responsible for the class experience, but don't forget about your coach. Anything and everything you do should be with the purpose of teaching your new coach. Resist the urge to forget about your trainee and allow them to fall in the background.

    Coaches:

    1. Lead any block they practiced during the practical

    • There is an opportunity to have them lead parts of live classes they did not practice during the practical.
      • Communicate in advance that you will model how to run the block in the first portion and then hand it off to them to do the exact same thing
      • Leadership should lead the first portion of the block to the model, then hand it off to them to finish the block

    2. Guide them through hands-on coaching for each obstacle/exercise

    • Model how then supervise/reinforce

    3. Model/encourage them to practice breaking the glass and get the lobby/parents "on the bus"

    2ND & 3RD CLASS:

IF the coach is confident and capable you may begin to create some space and see how they perform with less support.

    • Leadership should still be on the floor ready to step in and provide assistance. That proximity and having you as a "safety net" will instill confidence they'll need to move towards independence

    4TH-6TH CLASS:

    1. Based on how they performed in their first 3 classes you may start on the floor with the coach and then move off the floor once you are confident they can run a class without your support.

    • This milestone may only take a few classes while others might require additional field training before leadership feels confident stepping off the floor to evaluate

    2. Once you believe they are ready you will use the New Coach Evaluation to evaluate them as point

    • Don't rush results, take the time to build a strong foundation for future success...

    Leadership ROE:

    1. You are responsible for the class experience when training new coaches. When they are on the floor this should be your TOP priority. Deviating from this may lead to poor class experience and coach strain/fatigue.
    2. Provide live training for anything you are unable to train on during the practical, such as:
      • Hands-on coaching
      • Attention getters
      • Breaking the glass
      • Point & rover communication
      • Using KSC app

    Feedback Opportunities

    During classes:

    • Real-time feedback that can easily be changed in the moment and non-verbals without disturbing the flow of class
    • Alignment and assignment

    Between classes:

    • Prioritize 1 feedback point (DNA or skills) to implement that will improve the next class

    After classes:

    • At the end of the shift, echo coaching DNA feedback from between classes and provide a maximum of 2 areas to improve for the next training day

Our recommended evaluation cadence is after they pass their initial point and rover evaluations they should be re-evaluated after 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, and then every 90 days after that.
