It’s the night of October 31st.

Leaves crunch under your feet as you make your way down the sidewalk from one house to the next. The next house is at the top of a steep hill. The yard actually looks like a real cemetery. You don’t normally go up this street but there’s a light shining on the large stoop. The kind of house that gives out king size candy bar, you think.

As you approach you notice a rocking chair with a poorly crafted straw figure, a grinning snaggletooth pumpkin for a head. In its lap sits a bowl full of candy and a sign that says “Take one”. Your intuition is fulfilled when you look inside the bowl and find the best selection of candy in the neighborhood. Too bad this pumpkin head is really starting to rot.

You dig through and pull out your favorite, looking around. Not another soul in sight. Then you pick up the entire bowl and dump it into your bucket. Your friends won’t believe it when they see this haul!

Laughing, you put the bowl back and turn around when a straw hand grabs hold of you and stops you in your tracks. "Not so fast! Think you can steal Ol' Jack's treats, eh? Now you have to play a game." The pumpkin head leans in close, its triangle eyes smoldering with glee.

"Answer my questions. Get them right and perhaps you'll make it home tonight. Get them wrong and, well, let's just say Ol' Jack likes his tricks! He he he he!"

Many modern Halloween traditions trace their roots back to Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"), an ancient Pagan harvest festival. On the night of Samhain, it was believed that the veil between the world of living and the world of the dead was at its thinnest. People set bonfires and put out lanterns to guide the spirits of their loved ones back home, and sometimes wore costumes to disguse themselves from the vengeful spirits of their enemies.
