It is that time of year again, where we are gearing up to release a new round of data to the Snapshot Climate tool, and we would love to tell you all about it.
The Snapshot Climate Tool, developed by Ironbark Sustainability in collaboration with Beyond Zero Emissions, has been providing free and accessible emissions information since 2019. The Snapshot Climate tool continues to add value to the efforts of councils and communities around Australia to reduce emissions.
Our 2023 updates are as big as they get and you can come and hear about what it means for your profile and your data! Join us at our webinar at 11am AEDT on Wednesday November 8th to get all the latest from the Snapshot team on new insights to help determine the most effective zero emissions actions for your local area.
Improvements and Changes
This year the biggest change will be the introduction of fugitive emissions to the profile. This addition builds on the provision of complete Basic+ profiles in last year's data update. Fugitive emissions come from oil, gas and coal mining - an overlooked sector of emissions in Snapshot to date. They are critical to align state and national totals with local government profiles. As with the inclusion of Industrial Process and Product use emissions, some profiles will increase in total value, on average by about 5%, but will now provide a more complete picture of emissions, in line with the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Inventories. Many councils have no fugitive emissions, but for councils with a high allocation of mining and resource extraction the emissions profile may increase substantially.
As well as providing new profiles for the 2021 calendar year and the 2021-22 financial year we have also made a few changes and additions to the data sources, methods and verifications to improve data accuracy, as outlined below.
- Timeseries data - additional year of data, showing trends and tracking of emissions reduction progress
- Subsector data - addition of commercial subsectors to provide more detailed and granular emissions information.
- Transport data - method updates to ensure the total transport numbers align with Australia's National Greenhouse Accounts.
- Stationary energy data -Addition of an industrial agricultural subsector
- For all sectors - Improved allocation of emissions based on where the jobs are not where people live.
We will also be giving a sneak peak into new developments behind the scenes that enable you to see which organisations are responsible for the biggest pieces of the emissions pie in your location, which can support even more effective approaches to reducing emissions across your community.
We’re very grateful to our 2023-2024 Snapshot Sponsors: City of Bayside, City of West Torrens, City of Kingston, City of Mitcham and City of Stonnington. It’s thanks to these councils who have jumped on board to support Snapshot that emissions profiles and climate information remains free and accessible for their communities - and all communities - around Australia.
