Holiday Workshops

Sailors’ Knot Ornament Workshop
Saturday, November 14th, 10am-1pm
$35/participant

This workshop will include instruction and practice tying a flat Turk’s head knot out of lobstering string. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have completed one or two Sailors’ Knot Ornaments. Start times are staggered to allow personal instruction. Individuals may require more or less than the scheduled time. All materials are provided and attendees will go home with materials for additional knotwork. Attendees who want to reinforce their knot-making skills are encouraged to attend both this workshop and the Sailors’ Knot Wreath Workshop on December 6th.

Shell Art Photo Frame Workshop
Saturday, November 14th, 1:30pm-3:30pm
$25.00/participant

Use your creativity (and dreams of summer) to decorate a wooden picture frame with sea shells. This craft is a perfect DIY holiday gift! All ages welcome. Participants under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Sailors’ Knot Wreath Workshop
Saturday, November 21st, 10am-1pm
$60/participant ($85 combined knot workshop fee - use coupon code BOTH)

Starting with a single piece of cotton rope, create your own sailors’ knot wreath! Participants will use wooden jigs to help them create their wreaths. Start times are staggered to allow personal instruction and assistance. Individuals may require more or less than the scheduled time. Participants who are interested in learning how to make different sizes of wreaths with a Turk’s head knot are encouraged to attend both this workshop and the Sailors’ Knot Ornament workshop on November 14th.

These workshop are led by Penobscot Marine Museum Education Director Jeana Ganskop.

Ocean Tapestry Workshop
Saturday, November 21st, 1:30pm-4:30pm
$40/participant

Inspired by the ocean views we see on Penobscot Bay, create a woven piece featuring a variety of yarns, fabric, and fibers. Materials are provided. You are welcome to bring additional supplies.

This workshop is led by Penobscot Marine Museum Education Assistant and local fiber artist Veronica Maresh Mead.
