Instructions and Tips for completing the SM-LAC Scholarship application

Thank you for your interest in the 2024-25 SM-LAC Scholarship! Before you start your application, read the instructions below. After reading the instructions, begin the application process. Note: The applicant is responsible for the accuracy of all contact information provided.
1. This is a Merit Scholarship. All completed applications will be rated based on community service, leadership, academic achievement, and letters of recommendation. Finalist will also be interviewed.
2. Interviews will be held in March 2025.
3. Notifications - Award letters will be sent in April 2025. Scholarships will be awarded at our Annual Scholarship Reception (May 2025).
4. If you do not provide all requested information by the deadlines your application is not complete. The deadline for the SM-LAC application is February 15, 2025.
5. The amount of each scholarship award and number of winners is not set. It is determined each April by the chapter’s final scholarship fundraising total. (Note: In 2024, 22 winners received awards between $1k - $5K)
6. When you submit your application, you will receive an email copy of your submission. This is your confirmation that the application was received. Review your answers for accuracy.
7. Make sure you have the correct email addresses and phone numbers where requested.
8. You will be able to save your application and return to complete it as a later time.
9. Reference Extracurricular Activities (Section 4) and Community Service/Volunteer Work (Section 5) – You will not receive credit in both sections for the same activity/club/organization/church group. For example, if Beta Club is listed as your extracurricular activity in Section 4 you will not receive additional credit in Section 5 if you list Beta Club as your volunteer organization. No duplications are allowed.
10. Letters of recommendation will not be accepted from relatives.
11. All letters of recommendation and transcripts should be sent to scholarship@smlacdst.org. It is your responsibility to ask your school counselor to submit your transcripts and to ask others for a letter of recommendation.
12. Read all instructions carefully. For example, the essays must be 300-500 words.
13. Use your time wisely. Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks are a great opportunity to work on your scholarship applications. Do not wait until the last minute to submit.
14. Follow up with all references to make sure they submit the Letter of Recommendation deadline – February 15, 2024.
15. Check your email regularly for notifications from the committee.

- Gwinnett County: Centerville (30078), Lilburn (30047, 30048), Loganville (30052), Snellville (30039, 30078), Stone Mountain (30087)
- Rockdale County: Conyers (30012, 30013, 30094), McDonough (30252), Stockbridge (30281)
- Walton County: Loganville (30052)

Please type a 300-500 word essay on one (1) of the three topics listed below. You will be assessed on your ability to communicate your thoughts. Please use the SAT Essay Scoring Guide to assist you with your writing. Be sure to indicate the topic that you select.
1. What is the biggest issue facing your community and how would you solve it if granted the necessary resources?
2. Are Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs needed in schools, colleges, and the workforce? Why or Why Not?
3. Teacher quality is an important factor in student achievement. Describe the attributes of your favorite teacher and the impact he/she had on your academic achievement.

Please ask your references to send a letter of recommendation on your behalf. All letters should be emailed by your reference to scholarship@smlacdst.org by the Feb. 15th deadline date. References from relatives will not be accepted. At least one reference must be from a school official at the school you currently attend.
