  • Patients without a VCPR cannot have prescriptions approved

To provide medical advice and prescriptions, we must have established and maintained a VCPR (Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship), which generally requires in-person evaluation every 6-12 months.

If your pet has not been seen by us within the last 12 months, you must re-establish the VCPR by scheduling an in-person visit, or at minimum, Telemedicine to discuss your pet's care with a veterinarian and make a plan.

If your pet was more recently seen by another veterinary hospital, it would be best to contact that hospital for medical advice or prescription approvals.

  • Preventatives

We recommend all pets have year-round parasite prevention
  • DOGS

Based on AAHA-AVMA, CAPC, and CDC guidelines, all dogs should be on effective year-round prevention for heartworm, GI parasites, fleas, and ticks, considering risk of exposure.

Heartworm preventatives are all FDA-approved prescription products, and all are excellent at the prevention of heartworm but have variable efficacy for different GI parasites. For example, Heartgard Plus is only effective at killing adult roundworms and hookworms, while Sentinel Spectrum is effective at killing juvenile and adult roundworms and hookworms, as well as whipworms and tapeworms. Some heartworm preventatives also protect against fleas and ticks.

Flea and tick preventatives are more variable, as some are FDA-approved while others are EPA-regulated. FDA products work systemically and require a prescription, and have high efficacy and low variability from pet to pet, while EPA products work topically, are over-the-counter (OTC, no rx needed), and can have variable efficacy and effectiveness, especially for fleas. EPA-regulated over-the-counter products generally have less research/testing and manufacturing oversight compared to FDA products. Examples of FDA products include Bravecto, NexGard, and Credelio, while over-the-counter EPA products include Advantix II, Frontline Plus, and Seresto collars. We DO NOT recommend any generic over-the-counter products, as efficacy can be very poor.

Preventatives are typically administered monthly, unless otherwise indicated.

Generally for our dog patients, we typically recommend either:

Sentinel Spectrum (monthly) + Bravecto (12-week chew or topical; 1-month chew for dogs <6 months old)

    Or

    Credelio Quattro (monthly)

These provide excellent coverage for heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm, as well as fleas, ticks, and mites. Sentinel Spectrum is also effective against whipworm.

    Pricing Per Dose:
    Sentinel Spectrum - $11
    Bravecto 12 week chew - $76
    Bravecto 12 week topical - $67
    Credelio Quattro - $36

If purchasing 6 or 12 months at a time, our in-hospital pharmacy price is often cheaper than online pharmacies once we apply manufacturer rebates. Rebates are instant and processed by us, so you save at the time of purchase.

**All items must be purchased at one time, on one invoice, for one pet.
**Bravecto 12-week chews and topical are both available (no topical in-hospital for dogs >88 pounds)

    **Bravecto 1-month does not qualify

There are also rebates for Sentinel Spectrum and Bravecto when purchased separately.

**Pricing through Art City Vets using manufacturer rebates is lower than listed online pharmacies**

  • We recently started carrying Credelio Quattro, which has the same spectrum of coverage as Simparica Trio, but has a slightly faster and better efficacy for fleas and ticks compared to Simparica Trio. They both are administered monthly and provide protection against heartworm, fleas, ticks, mites, roundworm, hookworm, and tapeworm.

Typically our pricing for Credelio Quattro is cheaper than Simparica Trio purchased online due to manufacturer rebates.

  • Selamection (Revolution, Selarid, Senergy) is not an effective tick preventative, and is very weak against fleas in dogs, requiring additional products to provide good parasite coverage. There are usually more cost-effective coverage options to consider.

Please contact us if you'd like help making a parasite prevention plan for your pet.

  • CATS

Based on AAHA-AAFP, CAPC, and CDC guidelines, all cats should be on effective year-round prevention for fleas, and may benefit from prevention for GI parasites and ticks based on exposure. Even indoor only cats have some flea and mosquito (heartworm) exposure and may encounter GI parasites from paratenic hosts (flies, mice) or eggs entering the home.

Examples of FDA products include Bravecto Plus, Revolution, and Advantage Multi, while over-the-counter EPA products include Advantage II, Frontline Plus, and Seresto collars. We DO NOT recommend any generic over-the-counter products, as efficacy can be very poor.

Preventatives are typically administered monthly, unless otherwise indicated.

For the majority of our feline patients, we recommend Bravecto Plus, which offers excellent flea/tick prevention, and also protects against heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm. One dose of Bravecto Plus lasts for 2 months and is applied topically. For kittens under 5-6 months old, we recommend selamectin ($23 for a 1 month dose).

Current Rebates for Products Purchased Directly from the Art City Vets In-Hospital Pharmacy:

    Bravecto Plus  Price
    12 months (6 doses) $253 ($21/month)

    4 months (2 doses) $86 ($22/month)
    --includes $20 rebate
    2 months (1 dose) $53 ($27/month)

**All items must be purchased at one time, on one invoice, for one pet.

  • Revolution is brand-name selamectin. There are now multiple generic options which are much lower cost and equality effective, such as Revolt, Selarid, or Senergy.

  • Prescription Food

  • We have a few foods in stock in the hospital for clients to purchase in small quantities. Click "In-Hospital" to see the list.

For long term diets, we recommend using an online pharmacy such as Purina ProPlan VetDirect, HillsToHome, or Vets First Choice. We can also approve diets on Chewy or provide a written script, but we must know the exact diet as blanket approvals or scripts are not accepted (ie cannot do "all types of c/d" and need to write "Hill's c/d Multicare Urinary Care Stress Chicken & Vegetable Stew Wet Cat Food").

For the most options, we CAN approve entire lines of diets on Hills to Home and Purina ProPlan Vet Direct.

i/d is a "bland food," and can also be substituted for the prevention of stones/crystals (ie Hills c/d, Royal Canin Urinary SO).

  • Make sure to indicate above which online pharmacy or if you'd prefer a written script!

Please also note which exact diet you would like approved (Royal Canin Renal Support E instead of Royal Canin kidney food). You can also provide the SKU number found on the packaging!

For Hills to Home and Purina ProPlan Vet Direct, we CAN approve entire lines of food to give you the maximum flexibility.

Click HERE to download a full list of prescription diets with SKU numbers.
