    • About This Anthology
    • Resilient Colleagues and fellow Advocates for Change,

As we embark on our professional journeys, filled with aspirations and determination, we confront the harsh truth that success often demands an unwavering resolve, pushing us to discover strength we never knew we possessed. Our dedication makes us sacrifice time, mental well-being, and precious family moments, all in our relentless pursuit of career advancement. We find solace in affirmations as we navigate the challenges of each day.

    • Today, we stand together to reflect on our shared experiences. We recognize that our valuable contributions, fueled by our passion and dedication, have sometimes been overshadowed simply because of the color of our skin. It is crucial to understand that we are not alone in this struggle. Many of us have walked the same path, experienced the isolation of our battles, and invested our hearts and souls in our workplaces, aspiring to become the individuals we envision despite facing setbacks and a sense of disposability.

In some instances, we've had to endure a barrage of microaggressions and disrespect, all while treading carefully to protect the fragile sensibilities of others. Holding those mistreating us accountable often feels like a path leading straight to the unemployment hotline. We've realized that although the employment agreement outlines certain rules and regulations, our employers may selectively enforce them, especially when it concerns supervisors who exhibit misconduct. These rules can be conveniently wielded against us when it's time for our removal.

In the rare instances when we decide to speak out, we are met with a slow and agonizing journey toward justice, often marked by skepticism and the demanding task of repeatedly justifying our position to those who question the validity of our claims or demand corroborating evidence. Even when we present irrefutable proof, our voices may still be stifled, leaving us feeling defeated.

    • We've learned to rise above the mispronunciation or misspelling of our names in emails, the lack of recognition for our brilliant ideas, and the disheartening experience of being tokenized as the spokesperson for people of color. All the while, we navigate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion spaces that often serve as mere checkboxes and fail to address the underlying issues that hinder the success of individuals from diverse backgrounds in historically and predominantly white institutions.

We see through these charades but commend each other for our persistence and determination. Because of our unwavering commitment to rise above adversity, we are uniting to create a powerful collection of stories.

These stories are not just narratives; they are calls to action. They remind us that we hear and see each other and are standing shoulder to shoulder, ready to drive change in the workforce.

Despite the rhetoric that suggests racism belongs to the past, we know that it is alive and well in the workplace. When Black individuals choose to leave, consider it a clarion call to action.
