Hello-
Thank you for your interest in volunteering to help with FOBCAS Spay/Neuter surgical recovery.
We will be surgically altering FOBCAS cats on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays after all other pets have had their surgeries. This process will start between 12-1 pm and conclude between 2-4 pm.
Available Shifts
We are looking for volunteers to cover from 12- 4 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Training
Select Thursdays from 12-3 pm by appointment
Job Description
FOBCAS has their own room in our building. Volunteers will be working in this room. Staff will come in to administer anesthetics.
Volunteers will monitor the cats as they fall asleep and call the staff when the cat is asleep. Once the cat is asleep, volunteers will call us and we will come take the cat(s) back to surgery. During surgical time, volunteers will clean and prepare traps for the cats return.
Cats will receive any invasive procedures (vaccines, chips, ear tips, FIV blood draws) while in the surgical area.
Once returned to the FOBCAS room, cats are kept warm and monitored for proper breathing and gum color.
We use very short acting anesthetic agents for safety. During the short time the cats remain asleep, volunteers will follow the paperwork to do the following as needed:
· Ear tips are treated to prevent bleeding and hemostat is removed
· Revolution is applied
· Nails are trimmed
· FIV tests are watched for results (we will start the tests)
· Ears are cleaned/flushed (we will teach how this is done)
· Time is watched so that if cats remain asleep after 15 minutes of arrival, staff is called to give a reversal agent.
· Cats are returned to carriers for recovery.
· Cats in traps are continually visually monitored until they are fully awake
After surgery, the volunteers help load the cats in the van and then thoroughly clean the FOBCAS room.
What to do next
If you are interested and available from 12- 4 on any Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, please fill out this form so we can submit your information to our insurance carrier before we get started. Once we have insurance approval, we will reach out to set up a training date.
Thank you again for your help. FOBCAS has been a wonderful group to work with and we look forward to meeting you.
