"What inspired me was the fact that ART is imbedded in StuART. This is being recognized now by community efforts to develop and enhance the Arts. The Creek District is a great example of this. I've incorporated some historical reference to the early 1900's with the swirling sky background which can accentuated by the laying of mosaic tile, reflective of art deco at the time Stuart was developing. The seagull represents our environment of the sea, open air, landscape, all inspiration for artists. The hibiscus and butterfly represent the beauty of our natural setting, as well."

Maria is a retired resident of Palm City. As an artist, she is constantly inspired by the inherent beauty of our surroundings. Open air, open space and natural beauty have always attracted artists. It's what compelled her to apply to this program.

She considers herself as an artist in the realm of craft. She is a lifelong potter, working in clay, but has experimented in a variety of other crafts, painting and printmaking along the way. Her first exposure to mosaic and stained glass began after she retired.

  • This design was submitted by Sharon Mason of the GFWC Woman's Club of Stuart.

"This design depicting a woman at the beach is submitted by the GFWC Woman's Club of Stuart. Stuart has some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere and our relaxed lifestyle is one of the best parts of Martin County."

The GFWC Woman's Club of Stuart will celebrate the 110th anniversary of their work in the community this year and they hope that they can commemorate it by being represented by a sidewalk mural. They have a number of wonderful artists in their club and, as part of their commitment to community service, their Arts Committee supports visual and performing arts in their area. They would be very excited to be selected to participate in this program.

"My design showcases my love for coffee and how it's created a community for me and so many others in Stuart, FL. Coffee shops, just like Roasted Record, serve as a place for loved ones to create memories and to connect. The three energetic hands in the design would invite people into any shop or simply inspire conversation as they walk by. My design both exemplifies why these businesses are so important for the community and how it embodies the welcoming, lively, and intimate atmosphere that coffee shops aim to provide."

Emily has been practicing art professionally since she was 10 years old when she attended, interned and taught at Visionary School of Arts in Stuart, FL. She went to FAU to earn her BFA in Painting and upon graduating started working as an art teacher at Fort Pierce Central High School. She started her 5th year teaching at FPC, expanding the drawing program to many scaffolded levels and developing the Yearbook program.
She creates art to answer the questions she sees around her. To parallel this, she approaches her art as a problem that needs to be solved, emphasizing formalism and expression equally. She mainly enjoys portraiture and color theory, however digital art and photojournalism have become a new form of expression. She also creates functional pottery and sells it at Hani Honey as another avenue of making. She goes to every Art Walk and spends quality time in the Creek District on weekends.
