The Community Land Act would, among other things: 1) require the City to prioritize nonprofits and community land trusts first when giving away public land, instead of for-profit developers; 2) give CLTs and other mission-driven nonprofits a first right to purchase multifamily buildings when landlords sell; and 3) replace the tax lien sale with an equitable system that engages CLTs to keep New Yorkers in their homes and convert financially distressed buildings into permanently-affordable housing. This would strengthen our community's ability to create permanent, deeply affordable housing, mitigate displacement, create community-stewarded green and community spaces to address our disproportionate health injustices and support our right to self-determination.
