  • Frequently Asked Questions and Terms

  • Michigan Licensed

We are licensed to practice law in Michigan. We can not do out-of-state estate planning or divorces. Even so, out-of-state issues arise with other matters, and when that happens, we identify it as an issue requiring the services of a lawyer licensed in the other state.
  • Engagement

You engage us by paying the fee associated with the service or product you're purchasing. Engagement is limited to that purchased.
  • Adverse Party.

If the adverse party attempts to engage us, we will inform them that we cannot represent them.
  • Copies & License of Documents

The purchase of a Taproot toolkit entitles you to one license to complete one healthcare power of attorney. This packet may not be reused, redistributed, resold, or copied to serve more than one person.
  • Signing Documents

We do not draft documents or hold signing meetings. Most people sign their documents at a bank or other financial institution.
  • Limited Scope Representation

Taproot practices limited scope representation (LSR). This means a lawyer does a part of a legal project and the client does another part. Traditionally, firms are “full service” (i.e., “full” in scope). At Taproot, LSR means that we provide the following services individually or in combination: Taproot Law, PLLC, focuses on legal advice sessions, documents to-go, classes, or a combination of these.
  • Joint Representation

Joint representation is often relied on for attorneys to advise couples estate planning, joint owners of real estate, co-personal representatives, family members who want to learn about estate planning or probate, and other situations where interests align. But at any time, those could change into conflicting interests that could affect our professional judgment. If we can’t represent either party effectively or according to the rules of professional conduct, I will resign in my own discretion. By agreeing to a joint representation, you agree to a limited waiver of confidentiality privilege that lets us disclose an otherwise confidential communication to the other person. Each party maintains this right to confidentiality between us all. I cannot keep secrets from the others. I may speak with you individually or jointly, in my discretion.
