Ancestral Altar
Create an Ancestral Altar: a sacred space for ritual, prayer, and meditation, serving as a conduit for honoring and nurturing your relationship with your guardian ancestor and all your ancestors.
Choose a place that is quiet, and comfortable, it may be a quiet corner in your garden, a window you can sit by, or a small table in a quiet space in your home.
Make a list of the items you'll need to create your ancestral altar. These may include:
- A small table or surface for your altar
- A cloth or scarf to cover the altar
- Candles or Incense
- A small bowl of water
- Photos or mementos of your ancestors Crystals or stones
- Fresh flowers or herbs
- A journal or notebook
Gather these items and place them in your designated space.
Begin by cleansing your space and the items you've gathered. You can do this by smudging with sage, sprinkling salt, or using any other method that resonates with you. You may want to use sound to cleanse the energy and create a sacred space.
Cover your chosen surface with the cloth or scarf, signifying the sacredness of the space.
Arrange the items on your altar with intention. Place the photo, memento or object that represents your guardian ancestor in a central position. You can place candles, crystals, stones, any natural items and items that connect you to your ancestors, for example, a family heirloom, photographs, or old letters.
Consider if there are any other ways that you feel guided to honor your guardian ancestor. There may be a specific object that you feel drawn to place on your altar.
Listen to your intuition, and follow what your heart is guiding you.
Light the candles and incense, symbolizing the presence of spirit and the connection with your ancestors. You may instead want to burn incense, sage or essential oils.
Attend to this sacred space, take care of it, and feel your guardian ancestor respond to your loving intentions and attention.
Meditation
Set aside time each day to visit your ancestral altar. Light the candles and incense, and sit quietly in meditation. You can also offer a prayer or speak to your guardian ancestor, sharing your thoughts and feelings. Or you can simply ask to connect to them and for anything they would like to share with you that day.
Journaling
Keep a journal nearby to record your experiences, insights, and any messages you receive during your time at your ancestral altar and in daily meditation.
