    Students seeking this fellowship from the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders should complete this application form and submit it by March 1*.

    Applicant Requirements

    • Must have been a Brehm Scholar and have conducted and successfully completed a significant research project during the Brehm Scholarship year, working closely with a faculty partner
    • Must be currently enrolled in, or admitted to, a graduate program within EMU’s College of Education; if currently enrolled, must be on track to complete the program within six years of beginning the program
    • Must show a demonstrated record of academic excellence, leadership, and community service
    • Must exemplify outstanding pre-professional (and, if applicable, professional) skills in their chosen field, coupled with a commitment to serve children, adolescents, and/or adults with special needs

     

    If awarded, the recipient will:

    • Work closely with a faculty mentor to enhance and expand the scope of the research project conducted during the Brehm Scholarship year
    • Disseminate research and findings at a minimum of three (3) professional conferences OR submission of an article, approved by the faculty mentor, for publication to a professional journal (an alternative dissemination plan may also be created if it is approved by the Brehm Center director and the faculty mentor)
    • Attend three Brehm Fellow meetings over the course of their Brehm research year
    • Work with the faculty mentor to develop partnerships with K-12 schools and/or organizations servicing the special needs community and deliver training/services based on their research both on-site and on campus

     

    To apply, please submit:

    • An essay (1000 words maximum) explaining how you meet criteria listed under “applicant requirements”. When we read your essay, our primary focus will be your ideas and not the quality of your writing.
    • A letter of support from your original Brehm Faculty Mentor. This must be delivered under separate cover (email from the faculty member) to the Chair of the Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders Scholarship Committee.
