    Students seeking to become Brehm Scholars should complete this application form and submit it by March 1*. NOTE: This is a one-year program of guided research with a faculty mentor with a follow-up symposium presentation the fall following the award year.

    Applicant Requirements

    • Undergraduate or graduate students admitted to the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders.
    • Minimum GPA of 3.2
    • Interest in working with a faculty mentor on an individual research project related to serving children, adolescents and/or adults with special needs.

    If awarded, the recipient will:

    • Complete a year-long research project in collaboration with a faculty mentor from the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Disseminate research at EMU’s Undergraduate or Graduate Research Conference
    • Attend Brehm summer course in the summer prior to their Brehm research year
    • Attend three Brehm Scholar meetings over the course of their Brehm research year
    • Complete final Brehm project (as determined by Brehm Center Director) by June of their Brehm research year, to be posted on EMU’s Digital Commons
    • Attend and participate in Brehm Symposium in Fall 2026

    To apply, please submit:

    1. An essay (500 words maximum) explaining the following
      • How do you hope to impact the field of special education or communication sciences & disorders?
      • How will becoming a researcher help you accomplish your goals?
      • How do your goals align with the mission of the Brehm Center?
      • When we read your essay, our primary focus will be your ideas and not the quality of your writing.
    2. One faculty recommendation. You will need to identify a faculty member in the department to provide a supporting recommendation.
