Art In City Hall

The Louisville Metro Government and Metro Council invite artists to submit works of art for consideration for display in the third annual Art in City Hall exhibition. Selected artworks will be exhibited in the entrance lobby, hallways and public spaces within City Hall. Primary audiences will include the Metro Council representatives, staff, visiting constituents, and members of the public attending Metro Council and committee meetings. Artists may submit two-dimensional artwork in any media. Deadline for receipt of submissions is 4:59 pm, January 12, 2026.

BACKGROUND

City Hall is located at 601 W Jefferson Street in downtown Louisville. The Italianate stone structure was designed by John Andrewartha and C.S. Mergell and built in 1870-73. City Hall’s architectural details on the exterior of the building reference Louisville’s economic strengths at the time it was built, including a series of animal heads above the second-story windows and the pediment relief depicting a locomotive. Today, City Hall houses the offices and chambers of the Metro Council. The Metro Council is the legislative branch of Louisville Metro Government and is comprised of 26 council members corresponding to the 26 districts throughout Jefferson County.

Elegibility

This opportunity is open to all artists of any race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality or disability working in Louisville/Jefferson County.Artist should submit original, two-dimensional artwork meeting the specifications outlined below. There is no entry fee. Each artist selected to exhibit their work will receive a $500 honorarium. The Art in City Hall exhibition will take place from February 2026 through January 2027.

·       Artwork will be selected by a committee consisting of Commission on Public Art, Metro Council, and Metro staff members.

·       Up to six artists will be selected for the exhibition.

·       Each selected artist will be asked to exhibit one or more of the submitted artworks.

·       Upon selection of artwork, Louisville Metro Government will provide participating artists with a loan agreement covering the terms of the loan. Participating artists will complete and sign the loan agreement, and return a copy to the City.

· Las obras de arte serán seleccionadas por un comité compuesto por la Comisión de Arte Público, el Consejo de Metro y miembros del personal de Metro.

· Se seleccionarán hasta seis artistas para la exposición.

· A cada artista seleccionado se le pedirá que exhiba una o más de las obras de arte presentadas.

· Tras la selección de obras de arte, el Gobierno Metropolitano de Louisville proporcionará a los artistas participantes un acuerdo de préstamo que cubra los términos del préstamo. Los artistas participantes completarán y firmarán el contrato de préstamo y devolverán una copia a la Ciudad.
