HEREart is a curatorial incubator for new ideas, as well as an artist playground. HEREart provides emerging and early career curators and visual artists based in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut an opportunity to exhibit work in an active, well-located multi-arts center. We are interested in exhibitions that creatively work with our unique lobby, lounge and hallway spaces and engage the public with artwork that is specially curated to function within a busy environment. This focus on interactive space naturally leads HEREart to function as the center of a community of artists. HEREart encourages artist curators to expand and explore their relationship to art by providing several levels of artistic participation – from curating a large group show to exhibiting solo works. We invite proposals in all of the above areas!
HERE encourages artists to include site-specific installations in their HEREart proposal, particularly for the wall and ledge space along our large staircase on our first floor. Applications ideally should be for complete exhibitions. However, there is no guarantee that projects will be accepted "as is". Sometimes our resident curators get excited about pairing an applicant artist with someone else or including in a thematically appropriate group show. Although HEREart tends to be more interested in conceptual group shows, proposals featuring one artist's work are welcome provided that the show is conceptualized into a complete exhibition.
HEREart’s positioning at the entryways to our theatres and on the walls of all public areas ensures diverse and eclectic art lovers will experience the art. HEREart encourages artists to react and respond to this positioning with their exhibits. HERE is a very appropriate place for today’s active and interactive visual art: art that moves, makes noise, and physically engages the viewer. HEREart seeks to snag these passers-by and engage them in a dialogue with the space. HEREart is invested in supporting artworks of all media and various content (painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, collage, media), with a concentration on new work that in some way addresses the conditions of our space. Please note that there are limited options for sculptural pieces in terms of footprint; large sculptural works cannot be accommodated.
Every exhibit at HERE stretches our understanding of the words "art" and "performance," creating a multi-layered experience for audiences that sticks with them as they move from one space to the next. HEREart presents six exhibitions annually, curated by guest curators. Exhibitions will take place between July 2024 and August 2025 and include curator-driven collaborations between artists, as well as large-scale initiatives by solo artists. We highly recommend visiting our space prior to submitting a proposal so that you can experience the unique and dynamic nature of our space. We encourage proposals that draw from the imagination, but keep in mind-limited resources.
HEREart will provide one art installer for one day and a $400 budget, which include artist fees, shipping and transportation costs as needed for the particular exhibition, with the decision for how the funds will be distributed made by the exhibition curator. We will also cover the costs to promote the show via our website, dedicated e-blasts, press release, and postcards (all of which HERE will design). Lastly, we will host an opening reception with wine.
Application DUE Monday, March 4th 2024 by 12:00 noon.
A peer panel of artists and curators will review all submissions. Artist selections will be announced by April 30th, 2024. Questions can be addressed to programming@here.org or 212-647-0202 x320.
