  • Exotic bird ownership is a serious responsibility and the adoption of an unwanted or rescued bird can introduce a myriad of additional factors which need to be considered.  The Parrot Outreach Society wants to be certain you understand what you’re in for before you make the decision to adopt a bird.  We also want to be certain we know enough about you to feel confident we’re placing the bird into a satisfactory environment.  Thank you for your interest in adopting a bird from us!

  • Does anyone in the household have previous experience with exotic birds?*
  • Have you owned pets (birds or others) in the past that you no longer have?*

  • If you already have birds, have they been vet checked for infectious disease?*

  • Do all adults in your household know you plan to adopt a bird?

  • If you already have birds, what do you feed yourbird(s)?
  • Do you feel qualified to work with special needs birds (i.e. – physical defect or psychological problems)?
  • If you or someone else in the household is a smoker, will be you able to provide a smoke-free environment for the bird?
  • Does anyone in the household have asthma or allergies, COPD, emphysema?
  • If Yes, are you aware that birds carry a dust that can exacerbate these illnesses?
  • Do you feel you’re financially able to provide for a bird’s needs in terms of veterinarian costs, food, housing, toys, etc?
  • Are you willing to keep your home at a temperature that suits the needs of your bird whether or not you’re at home?
  • Are you aware that exotic birds can carry diseases which could be transmitted to humans?
  • Do you know that exotic birds are capable of biting, screaming, and destroying property, and that they tend to be very messy in terms of droppings and food splattering?
  • Do you know that exotic birds NEED a lot of attention and care and that behavioral modification can take years of patience to achieve?
  • Are you prepared to put in the effort to keep the cage clean, the food and water fresh, and to work with the bird consistently and patiently on a Daily basis to build a relationship of trust and companionship?
  • Have you done any prior research on exotic bird species,care, and behavior?*
  • If no, are you willing to do the research prior to the adoption?
  • Do you need education in proper avian care?
  • Do you understand that Parrot Outreach has specific guidelines and cage sizes that are appropriate for each species and that the dimensions of the cage have to be met before adoption can be finalized?

  • Do you consent to a visit to your home to inspect it prior to adoption and understand that we may visit again after adoption to ensure safety?
  • Do you have any plans to relocate out of the United States or out of the state of Florida?
  • We do ask for a formal adoption donation, which varies according to species and condition, (and is lower than the fees requested in larger cities}, to help us offset the costs of helping birds in need.  Money orders or cashier's check should be made payable to PARROT OUTREACH SOCIETY and the memo should read RESCUE.  We do NOT accept personal checks. Donations are non-refundable.

    Completion of this application does not guarantee you will qualify to adopt a bird. Prior to adoption, one or more members of the Parrot Society Rescue Team will do a home visit via video to be sure you will be able to provide a healthy and safe environment for the bird.  Please understand that a criminal background check will be done ONLY to ensure the adopter has no animal cruelty charges against them.

    Please be Advised:  Anyone attempting to acquire birds for persons having lost pets to any County Animal Control or FFWC will be reported to the authorities.  An Adoption Contract must be signed prior to the bird leaving our possession.

    The Parrot Outreach Society is committed to ensuring a safe and positive experience for all individuals involved in the bonding and adoption process of parrots. However, it is important to understand that the behavior of a parrot can be unpredictable, particularly during the initial stages of bonding or adaptation to a new environment. While the society takes every precaution to assess and ensure the compatibility between parrots and potential adopters, it cannot be held liable for any injuries, including bites, that may occur during these interactions. By signing this document and participating in the bonding or adoption process, you acknowledge that handling or being in close proximity to parrots involves inherent risks, and you accept responsibility for your own safety during the process.
