This document outlines the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9644 Relief Fund, established to offer financial aid to veterans, active duty personnel, and reservists facing emergency needs.
Who can apply?
- Any Colorado resident actively serving, in the reserves, or a veteran of the US Armed Forces.
- Veterans must have discharge documents proving an Honorable or General (Under Honorable Conditions) discharge.
- Membership in VFW Post 9644 is not required but encouraged (application link available on their LINKTREE page).
What documents are required?
You will be required to upload both your DD-214 and your state issued identification to this form to complete. Please have these forms ready before continuing with this application.
- Proof of eligibility: A Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214) or other official military discharge documentation.
- A valid federal or state-issued photo ID.
- A copy of the bill or invoice that we can pay to assist the veteran - Please attach the water/rent/electricity bill that we can issue payment to (we do not issue payment directly to the veteran).
What expenses are covered?
Grants are provided to cover essential emergency needs for:
- Shelter (including rental assistance)
- Utilities
- Healthcare
- Transportation
- Funeral costs
What expenses are not covered?
Grants will not be provided for non-essential items. VFW Post 9644 has the final say in determining needs vs. wants based on the information provided.
Important limitations:
- Maximum grant amount through this form: $1,000 effective January 1, 2025. Awards may be less depending on available funds.
- All grants require approval by the grant administrator board.
- Payments are made directly to the creditor, not the applicant. Cash or gift cards are not offered. VFW Post 9644 cannot open credit lines for expenses like hotel stays.
- Grants are limited to one per veteran every 365 days, with rare exceptions for severe emergencies considered on a case-by-case basis.
- The fund cannot provide ongoing assistance.
- The burden of proving eligibility lies with the applicant.
- Applicants are responsible for any tax liabilities associated with the received grant money.
