GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION
Residency Expectations
- The residency will be in person.
- Residents are expected to share their studio practice with MC students.
- Residents are at liberty to set their own schedules, though some student check-ins should take place during peak class hours: 9 am - 5 pm Monday-Friday Eastern Standard Time.
- Residents are expected to provide an artist talk as well as a workshop, demonstration, or interactive program. Past resident artist activities have included artist talks plus collaborative projects with students and demonstrations, workshops, and/or interactive installations. **To be clear, this is not an expectation for semester long academic teaching responsibilities.
- Resident has the option to program our Open Gallery exhibition space through the duration of their residency. Artwork installation in the Open Gallery will be conducted by the resident, with the support of department staff.
Artist Selection Criteria
The Exhibitions Committee will review the AIR proposals and make a selection regarding the suitability of the artist for the residency and the terms of the application. The committee selects artists with the student community in mind. Residency proposals will be evaluated on the quality of work and the teaching, artistic, or community-oriented objectives outlined in the proposal. Artists will be required to submit a completed application, samples of their work, current resume, and statement of intent that outlines the scope and activities anticipated during their residency.
Artist Qualifications
Artists should have a demonstrated professional body of work within their respective discipline and should be producing work on a current and consistent basis. Other relevant considerations might include experience in teaching, and involvement in community-oriented or collaborative projects.
AIR Program Administration and Management
The AIR program will be managed by the Exhibitions Committee of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts of the TP/SS Campus, which currently assumes responsibility for programming and managing all of the exhibition spaces within the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Art Center and the Cultural Arts Center Gallery. AIR applications will be reviewed and approved by the committee. Individual residencies will be managed by the Exhibitions Committee Coordinator.
Funding/Remuneration
Selected resident artists may also be eligible for a stipend to fund the interactive activities of their residency, subject to available funding. Artists must be eligible to file a US W-9 Tax form to receive payment. International artists, and those unable to file a US W-9 Tax Form are still permitted to apply but may be ineligible to receive the stipend.
Use of Facilities and Equipment
Each resident artist is provided with a studio space in The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center. Studios range in size from 150 to 350 square feet and include a sink and access to the MC wi-fi network.
Use of facilities and equipment outside residents’ assigned studio spaces must be approved by the AIR Coordinator. Residents may be permitted with approval to use studio spaces and equipment in the Cafritz facility as long as their activities do not interfere with classes or other college activities. Residents will be responsible for their own materials, tools, and equipment. MC tools and equipment may not be used or kept in AIR studios during the residency. AIRs are expected to adhere to all Montgomery College Health and Safety policies.
