Farm to Fork Level II

Prerequisite Required: Yes, must have taken a previous Farm to Fork class (7th and 8th grade only. 6th graders may take Level I in the spring.)

7th and 8th Students will harvest, prepare, and preserve produce from our school garden in this advanced cooking class. Students who have taken this class last year are invited to take the course again as this expanded block will allow us to dive deeper into recipe development, cooking tips and tricks, and group projects. Students will have the opportunity to develop their own recipes utilizing the bounty of the Fall harvest. This semester will review skills from Farm to Fork Level I and cover more advanced cooking techniques as we progress throughout the semester.
Individual and Dual Sports

This course provides students with an overview of individual sports. Furthermore, This course will supply students with a learning experience targeted towards the growth of their basic skills as it pertains to individual and dual sports. Students learn about a variety of sports such as badminton, tennis, pickleball, frisbee golf, yoga, running, hiking, biking, archery, bouldering, and bocce ball. The goal is for students to acquire adequate skills and knowledge, that in turn will inspire and promote physical activity for a lifetime.
Middle School Handwork
Teacher: Ms. Anderson
Prerequisite Required: No

In this class, students will expand their knitting, crochet and/or sewing skills (hand and/or machine sewing). Students who are new to these crafts will choose a craft to learn and start with beginner projects, while intermediate and advanced handwork students will have the opportunity to choose their own crafts and projects with guidance from Ms. Anderson. The focus for these students will be on deepening their understanding of these crafts, learning how to use patterns and choosing appropriate materials for a given pattern. Students will be graded on work habits and projects.
Music Performance Ensemble

In this elective we will develop the Mountain Sage Instrumental performance ensemble. This ensemble will prepare and perform at all festivals, music concerts, and various school events. The ensemble will explore various diverse styles and genres, while simultaneously holding to the traditional music of the school as required. This festival will also be an integral part of our festival life, rose ceremonies, and so forth. Any students who do any instrumental studies outside of MSCS are welcome to join. Students who have previously studied instrumental music and would like to revive that, are welcome to join. Students who want to study an instrument or be part of the ensemble are also welcome to join.
Passion Projects

A passion project is an endeavor that is uniquely yours; an opportunity for you to explore an area of interest that is unique to you; something you are intrinsically motivated to pursue because it brings you joy, intellectual and creative fulfillment, and personal satisfaction. Have you ever wanted to learn more about a certain topic, test a hypothesis, build or create something, learn a new artistic or musical skill, organize a service project or educate others on something? Then this is the class for you. You will have support to organize and design your project and the freedom to explore one of your passions during our 90 minute class together.
Performing Arts and Theatre

Being in a play is more than just memorizing lines – it’s telling a great story while collaborating with all of the other actors and artists. In this 90 minute theater class, students will dive deeper into theatre study. Using scenes, plays, and devised work they will come to see that what a character says is often only the tip of the iceberg. Objectives, actions, tactics, and emotions lie beneath the words. They will learn how to use acting tools to discover and express these things on stage.
Photography
Teacher: Maestra Bolton

In this hands-on Photography course, we will practice observation of the physical world, and learn how to use focus, composition, and light to create amazing images. Student photographers will learn camera functions, apply artistic principles of design and create their own portfolio of work. You may use your personal smartphone or tablet, or one provided in the class. **Student artists: please repeat this class if you enjoyed it already! Your skills will continue to improve, and we have added new topics.
Three Dimensional Art
Teacher: Mrs. Bandong
Prerequisite Required: No
Repeats: No, can only be taken for one semester
This class will focus on introducing students to a variety of 3-dimensional art mediums. Students will learn how to create artwork with clay by utilizing handbuilding techniques. Students will also enjoy the transformative process of glazing pottery artwork. Working with clay will be the focus, and other 3-Dimensional projects will also be explored like working with plaster cloth. Students must take this class before continuing on to the Level Two portion of this elective (Sculpture and Art in Public Places).
