Afterschool Jan - May 2024

Ages 5-10. 4-5 pm Please meet in the classroom. Come dressed to explore the outdoors. This is a drop-off class.

Fee: $5 plus membership or admission to the Garden.

Afterschool: Ancient Trees Jan. 10th

Trees can live for hundreds or even thousands of years. In this class, we’ll learn how to determine the age of a tree and explore some of the amazing trees in the Garden.

Afterschool: Woodpeckers Jan. 24th

Fayetteville is home to the endangered red cockaded woodpecker as well as pileated, downy, red-bellied woodpeckers and more! Come learn about these amazing birds and create a pecking woodpecker craft.

Afterschool: Bristle Bots Feb. 14th

In this class, we’ll create a simple circuit to turn a toothbrush head into a tiny moving bristle bot. It’s a fun introduction to the science of electricity.

Afterschool: Bird Beaks Feb. 28th

Did you ever think to compare the beak of an eagle with a pelican or a hummingbird? There’s an amazing variety of bird beaks supporting each species’ unique diet. In this class, we’ll learn about adaptation through a hands-on bird beak game.

Afterschool: Brilliant Beetles March 13th

In this class, we’ll explore the world of beetles with preserved specimens and hands-on activities. Did you know that 1 in 4 of the known animal species on Earth is a beetle? There are over 400,000 different species of beetles.

Afterschool: Animal Detectives March 27th

Wildlife maybe living right in your backyard, but we often don’t see animals that are talented hiders or active at night. In this class, we’ll learn to decipher the clues animals leave behind including footprints, food leftovers, and even scat.

Afterschool: Roly Polies April 10th

Roly polies (also known as pill bugs or potato bugs) are actually crustaceans like crabs adapted for life on land. In this class, we’ll learn about these easy to care for, safe to handle animals and create our own roly poly habitat.

Afterschool: Earth Week April 24th

Celebrate Earth Day every day with a conservation themed scavenger hunt and a book about how we can all make a difference.

Afterschool: Celebration May 8th

As another year of awesome afterschool classes comes to close, let’s celebrate our favorite memories with an end of year party including a sweet treat.
