  • SUBSTANCE USE

  • SMG missionaries and ministry staff hold positions of spiritual leadership. Their lifestyle choices can and do influence believers and non-believers. Therefore, in accordance with Holy Scripture, missionary and ministry staff members should seek to live lives which are holy and, following the example of our Lord, in love and humility, are to consider the interests of others ahead of their own interests (Colossians 3:1-17).

In accordance with Scripture, our ministry expects each SMG missionary and ministry staff member to live a life which is above reproach, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, (1 Timothy 3:1-7) and to act with a high level of consideration for those around him/her. This means that each SMG missionary and ministry staff must consider all lifestyle choices in the light of his/her role as a spiritual leader, and with respect to how particular actions can influence believers and non-believers. Some practices that are areas of freedom in Christ may not be wise choices for a SMG missionary (1 Corinthians 8:9-13; Romans 14). SMG missionaries are to refrain from questionable conduct and to act with sensitive regards for others (believers and nonbelievers) so that our ministry and testimony is “profitable.”

  • 10. As SMG staff, would you be willing to live in this way, and therefore give up any social habits that might lessen your ministry effectiveness and ability to represent Christ and SMG to people with whom you come in contact?*
  • 11. Do you use, or have you used, tobacco products?*
  • 14. Would you be willing to refrain from drinking alcohol if your leadership asked you not to in certain situations?*
  • 15. Have you ever abused alcohol or been in treatment for alcoholism?*
  • 16. Have you ever used any narcotics, hallucinogens or drugs not prescribed by a physician? Have you ever or are you currently using prescription drugs beyond the dosage prescribed by a physician?*
  • THEOLOGICAL QUESTIONS

  • 17. Is the Bible in its entirety, fully inspired by God and free from human error (inerrant) in the original manuscripts?*
  • 18. Besides the 66 books of the Old & New Testament, are there any other authoritative writings which are inspired by God?*
  • 19. Do you believe there is one God who eternally exists in a unity of being as three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit?*
  • 20. Did Jesus Christ live a sinless life?*
  • 21. Do you believe that Jesus Christ is fully human and fully God, forever united in one person?*
  • 22. Are there any mediators of salvation between God (the Father) and human beings other than the Lord Jesus Christ?*
  • 23. Following the resurrection, did Christ still have a physical body?*
  • 28. Did all humanity come under divine judgment when Adam and Eve rebelled against God?*
  • 31. Can a new believer be assured of salvation from the moment they trust in Christ as Savior and Lord?*
  • 33. Do you believe that unbelievers will experience eternal, conscious separation from Christ in hell for all eternity?*
  • DESCRIBE YOURSELF

  • Rows
  • 41. Have you ever struggled with an eating disorder?*
  • 42. Have you ever struggled with prolonged depression, strong anxiety, self-harm, or thoughts of suicide in a way that has affected your ability to do your job or school work?*
  • 43. Have you ever been convicted of a felony?*
  • SEXUAL WHOLENESS

  • As SMG missionaries, we are in a position of spiritual leadership and have a high level of influence in the lives of others. I Timothy 3 outlines many qualifications for those in spiritual leadership. Because of our position, each SMG missionary is asked to exhibit strong convictions and a lifestyle consistent with biblical standards in the sexual area of their life so that we may have an honorable reputation as ministers of the gospel. We recognize that behavior alone is an incomplete reflection of the heart, so it is our desire to engage with you in such a way that we consider the deeper stories that are behind the behavior. We affirm that God is always working to renew and transform our hearts and to redeem that which is broken within us. The following questions are asked with that in mind.

NOTE: Because of the sensitive nature of these questions (or if you are uncomfortable entering this through the secure website), you may prefer to discuss your answers over the phone.

  • 48. Would you prefer to answer this section of questions through a phone interview?*
  • If you answer yes, please share as much as you feel comfortable in writing on each of the following questions.

  • 49. Singles- In the past 3 years, have you had sexual involvement with the opposite sex or same sex which wouldn’t be considered honoring to God? (Including, but not limited to, physical touching leading to arousal &/or stimulation, oral sex, intercourse)?
  • 50. In the past 3 years, have you intentionally viewed pornographic material, read erotic literature, engaged in sexting, or participated in voyeurism in any form?
  • 51. Some people have found that their same-sex attraction can complicate ministry relationships or friendships. Has this ever been your experience?
  • FINANCIAL / MPD

  • SMG Missionary Staff Members raise their own financial and prayer support. Below are several statements which speak about SMG’s view of what we call Ministry Partner Development (MPD).

There are many advantages to this financial paradigm. The most significant advantage is that our “ministry partners” commit themselves to praying for our ministry. Psalm 127:1 tells us, “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” A ministry that is not founded upon and supported by prayer is a ministry that is doomed to failure. Therefore, our ministry partners play a critical role in the success of our ministry, not only through their financial giving, but also significantly through their prayers. Each staff member, including our president, is responsible for building a team of individuals and churches who work together to finance his or her ministry. Just as the pastor of a local church is paid as a result of the generous giving of his/her congregation, so our missionaries are paid as a result of the generous giving of our ministry partners.

SMG provides in-depth training for new missionaries. The training will provide you with an orientation to the ministry, an understanding of our mission and methods, and the tools you will need to communicate about your ministry to raise funds. Staff receive individual coaching, support and accountability throughout their ministry partner development process.

SMG is a faith-based missions organization. Becoming a SMG missionary staff, Intern, STINTer, or Part Time Field Staff involves not only meeting the standards for missionary service, but also raising funds to cover the financial needs of your personal ministry.

  • 61. Are you willing to initiate (through letters, phone calls, and setting up appointments) with people and ask them to join your team?*
  • 62. Are you willing to commit yourself to spending the majority of your hours/week working on MPD during the months prior to reporting to your assignment?*

  • 64. Do you have any questions about the general job descriptions presented here?*
  • 65. Are you able to fulfill the responsibilities listed in the Job Description with or without accommodation?*
  • STATEMENT OF FAITH

  • The sole basis of our beliefs is the Bible, God’s infallible written Word, the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. We believe that it was uniquely, verbally and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit and that it was written without error (inerrant) in the original manuscripts. It is the supreme and final authority in all matters on which it speaks.

We accept those areas of doctrinal teaching on which, historically, there has been general agreement among all true Christians. Because of the specialized calling of our movement, we desire to allow for freedom of conviction on other doctrinal matters, provided that any interpretation is based upon the Bible alone, and that no such interpretation shall become an issue which hinders the ministry to which God has called us.

    • There is one true God, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – each of whom possesses equally all the attributes of Deity and the characteristics of personality.
    • Jesus Christ is God, the living Word, who became flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. Hence, He is perfect Deity and true humanity united in one person forever.
    • He lived a sinless life and voluntarily atoned for human sins by dying on the cross as a substitute, thus satisfying divine justice and accomplishing salvation for all who trust in Him alone.
    • He rose from the dead in the same body, though glorified, in which He lived and died.
    • He ascended bodily into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, where He, the only mediator between God and humanity, continually makes intercession for His own.
    • Adam and Eve were originally created in the image of God. They sinned by disobeying God; thus, they were alienated from their Creator. That historic fall brought all people under divine condemnation.
    • Human nature is corrupted. As a result, all people are totally unable to please God. Everyone is in need of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
    • Salvation is wholly a work of God's free grace and is not the work, in whole or in part, of human works or goodness or religious ceremony. God imputes His righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, and thereby justified them in His sight.
    • It is the privilege of all who are born again of the Spirit to be assured of their salvation from the very moment in which they trust Christ as their Savior. This assurance is not based upon any kind of human merit, but is produced by the witness of the Holy Spirit, who confirms in the believer the testimony of God in His written word.
    • The Holy Spirit has come into the world to reveal and glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to individuals. He convicts and draws sinners to Christ, imparts new life to them, continually indwells them from the moment of spiritual birth and seals them until the day of redemption. His fullness, power and control are appropriated in the believer's life by faith.
    • Believers are called to live so in the power of the indwelling Spirit that they will not fulfill the lust of the flesh but will bear fruit to the glory of God.
    • Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, His Body, which is composed of all people, living and dead, who have been joined to Him through saving faith.
God admonishes His people to assemble together regularly for worship, for participation in ordinances, for edification through the Scriptures and for mutual encouragement.
    • At physical death the believer enters immediately into eternal, conscious fellowship with the Lord and awaits the resurrection of the body to everlasting glory and blessing.
    • At physical death the unbeliever enters immediately into eternal, conscious separation from the Lord and awaits the resurrection of the body to everlasting judgment and condemnation.
    • Jesus Christ will come again to the earth – personally, visibly and bodily – to consummate history and the eternal plan of God.
    • The Lord Jesus Christ commanded all believers to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world and to disciple people from every nation. The fulfillment of that Great Commission requires that all worldly and personal ambitions be subordinated to a total commitment to “Him who loved us and gave Himself for us.”
