Loneliness sucks. We are born alone, die alone, and spend the time in between trying not to be alone. But loneliness is also a powerful portal of creativity and inspiration. Some of the best art in the world is a result of loneliness. Consider Edward Hopper, who beautifully revealed loneliness in New York City. View the work of Frida Kahlo, lonely in her ailing body and her marriage, and yet colorful and beautiful in her work. Think of Pablo Picasso’s “Blue Period” or Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture, “City Square.” For an artist, loneliness is often good company.
