Orthopaedic Surgery - Faculty: Afshin Razi (Downstate + Morehouse only)
Students will spend one day in the operating room each week, two days in the office, and two days pursuing research. Students will attend all departmental conferences, biweekly student-oriented lectures, and weekly research meetings. Students select from various research activities, including clinical projects (database and/or data collection), review papers, and case reports Students are paired with a peer to learn the importance of teamwork and communication. Each student will have the opportunity to produce two manuscripts by the end of the program: one as the first author on their own research project, and one as the second author on their partner’s project. Students complete weekly assignments with their partners and participate in weekly research meetings with Dr. Razi. Students will present their research findings at the annual M.S.R.E. conference. Their presentation will be based on a completed manuscript, ready to submit to a peer-reviewed journal for publication consideration. After presenting their research, students will work with Dr. Rodriguez on the manuscript submission process.

The mission of the Maimonides Medical Center Emergency Medicine Summer Research Program for Underrepresented Minority Students is to expose first-year medical students to the specialty of Emergency Medicine and provide them with the tools, mentorship and resources needed to develop their critical thinking and analytic skills, regardless of their future specialty choice. Students who are underrepresented in medicine face many challenges throughout their education and training and this program is designed to encourage the development of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to succeed in their careers.
By participating in this program, students will have the opportunity to:
- Learn and practice critical thinking and analytic skills.
- Publish a research abstract as the first-author in an area of emergency medicine.
- Present the findings of their research at the Maimonides Medical Center Emergency Medicine Summer Research Conference/attend the MSRE Graduation.
- Understand the scope of practice of emergency medicine, including patient population, clinical encounters, procedures, documentation, and interdisciplinary teamwork.
- Gain an introduction to the subspecialties within emergency medicine, including administration, critical care, EMS, medical education, pediatric emergency medicine, simulation, social emergency medicine, and ultrasound.
- Develop a longitudinal mentoring relationship with emergency medicine residents and faculty

MS1 URM Summer Research Scholarship Award
The mission of the Maimonides Medical Center Department of Surgery Summer Research Program for Underrepresented Minority Students is to expose first-year medical students to the specialty of General Surgery and provide them with the tools, mentorship and resources needed to develop their critical thinking and analytic skills, regardless of their future specialty choice. Urology - Faculty: Ariel Schulman (Downstate Only)
The Division of Urology at Maimonides Medical Center offers comprehensive tertiary care for all aspects of Urologic disease. The division is comprised of 10 fellowship-trained Urologists and an ACGME-accredited Urology residency training program with 2 residents per year. MRSE students will be integrated into the Urology service and gain exposure to the office, operating room, and educational component of our training program. Students will spend 2 days per week in the office, 1 day in the operating room, and 2 days working on a dedicated research project. The clinical and research experience can be tailored to the specific interests of each student within the field of Urology.
Radiation Oncology - Faculty: Bernadine Donahue (Downstate Only)
“Maimonides Cancer Center is pleased to offer an 8-week summer elective to preclinical SUNY Downstate medical students. The elective provides opportunity for preclinical students to engage in clinical research and observership at the Maimonides Cancer Center located at 6300 8th Avenue, Brooklyn.
During the rotation, students will paired with faculty mentors for conducting an oncology-related research project. The research project will be identified at the beginning of the elective and is anticipated to be structured in such fashion that the student will be able to complete and present a meaningful project by the end of the rotation. Students also will have the opportunity to shadow in clinic and observe a range of care provided in the Cancer Center including consultation with newly-diagnosed patients, radiation treatment planning, and the delivery of systemic therapy. Additionally, students may attend multidisciplinary tumor boards, Grand Rounds, and didactic lectures with the Maimonides Medical Oncology fellows and the Downstate Radiation Oncology residents.”
Radiology - Faculty: Daniel Masri (Downstate Only)
Students will rotate through the radiology department and be exposed to the many subspecialties of radiology including interventional radiology. Students will attend resident lectures and spend time with radiology residents and attendings. They will get a feel for radiology workflow and resident training. Each student will work on at least one research project while rotating through our department. There will be ample time for students to complete their research projects. Students will present their research findings at the annual MSRE conference.
Pediatrics - Faculty: George Foltin (Downstate Only)
The Department of Pediatrics at Maimonides Medical Center is pleased to offer an 8-week summer elective to preclinical SUNY Downstate medical students. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in engaging in impactful clinical research and quality improvement at Maimonides Children’s Hospital. Students will be paired with faculty members who are conducting research/QI in several subspecialties. We expect to have opportunities for students to work on projects related to child abuse, infectious diseases, obesity, emergency medical services, and nephrology. Our program is primarily research-oriented and will be a valuable experience for those who are interested in learning how to design, carry out, and publish meaningful and impactful research. By the end of the rotation, students will be able to present their research at the Maimonides Medical Center Emergency Medicine Summer Research Conference. Additionally, participants will also be given shadowing opportunities in various clinical settings.
We hope that after completing this program, participating students will have gained a unique perspective on the scope and intricacies of pediatric medicine and its subspecialties, and research conducted within pediatric and adolescent populations.
Medicine - Faculty: Yu Shia Lin (Downstate Only)
The student can engage in different research activities, such as clinical research and case reports. The student will be paired with residents or research assistants to work on research projects. Students will meet with their mentors 2-3 times per week, attend all departmental conferences and weekly research conference . Moreover, students will be able to participate in inpatient and outpatient teaching rounds.
Psychiatry - Faculty: Anetta Raysin & Sophia Mikityanskiy (Downstate Only)
The Department of Psychiatry at Maimonides Health is committed to helping students, who are interested in pursuing a residency in psychiatry, master their research and quality improvement project skills through an engaging summer program.
Students can join a project in a variety of stages, which are likely to extend through the duration of the program: in the initial phase the focus is on performing literature reviews, study design and IRB applications (if warranted); the "middle" part is the data collection and analysis, and finally- the posters, workshops and/ or manuscripts preparation, based on the project results. Of note- smaller projects like case reports might be completed entirely during the 6 week summer program.
The majority of our projects are clinical and educational based, and one will be selected jointly by the student and mentor. Some examples of recent projects include: risk factors for suicide in the LGBTQ populations, traumatic symptoms and resilience post involuntary hospitalization, the impact of a summer therapeutic program on children's anxiety and depressive symptoms, educating psychiatric providers on the Monkeypox outbreak and others.
The student will meet weekly with the site supervisor- Dr Bodic and/or the academic chief resident for mentorship, support and review, as well as with the main team of the project they are working on for the actual project tasks.
All students will complete the CITI social and behavioral research basic training, as well as the Intro to Qi module from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement. Additional didactic and experiential instruction will be provided based on project.
