The Assistant Trainer licence is granted to persons who are employed on a full-time basis by a Class A Trainer, to assist the Trainer with the responsibilities of training horses and managing the racehorse training business. Please refer to the NZTR Licensing Policy for full details. Upon receipt, your application will be reviewed within 10 working days.

(a) have completed the NZ Certificate in Equine - Level 4 Assistant Thoroughbred Trainer qualification (or other similar accredited racing industry Equine Training qualification through a recognised training authority in an overseas jurisdiction recognised by NZTR);

or

(b) enrol in the Training Agreement for the Primary ITO and undertake the NZ Certificate in Equine - Level 4 Assistant Thoroughbred Trainer qualification.

(c) receive recognition by NZTR of prior industry learning and experience.

Health and Safety
The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (the HSW Act), which came into force on 4 April 2016, includes the concept of a “person conducting a business or undertaking” (PCBU). This includes all businesses or undertakings regardless of whether a person conducts a business alone or with others, or whether or not it is for profit or gain.

The HSW Act also contains obligations for “workers”, which is widely defined and would normally include, for example, Assistant Trainers. - I will cooperate absolutely with any health and safety investigation conducted by the Racing Integrity Board, NZTR or WorkSafe;
- I will immediately report any incident that must be reported under the HSW Act or as directed by NZTR to the appropriate authorities;

Applications are reviewed by Racing Integrity Board Stewards and then considered by the NZTR Licensing Panel which, based on the information supplied, may:
- request additional information or clarification from the applicant regarding the application;
- defer an application until further information is supplied;
- refer an application to the NZTR Racing & Integrity Committee;
- approve the application (including, where considered appropriate, on conditions); or
- decline the application.

You will be notified of the outcome of your application by the NZTR Licensing Panel by email. If your application is approved, NZTR will send you a notification outlining the terms and conditions of your licence.

You can appeal to the NZTR Racing & Integrity Committee within 28 days of when you were notified that your application has been declined.
