• Procedures for Warehouse Employees: Guidelines for Entering and Exiting Drive Lanes while Operating Trucks

  • The Drive Lane plays a crucial role in our operations as it serves as a designated area for warehouse employees to safely load trucks for our drivers the following day. Serving all on and off premise accounts throughout Delaware. Each day, multiple trucks will be in motion, entering and exiting the warehouse. These procedures are designed to provide guidance on the specific times for trucks to enter and exit the drive lane, enabling all NKS Warehouse Employees to load trucks in a safe and efficient manner

  • To Enter Drive Lane

    These safety procedures are to be used each and every time
    • Inspect the trailer, making sure the tractor is properly attached to the trailer, including brake lines.
    • Climb into the tractor using three points of contact. 
    • Turn on the ignition.
    • Wait for the tractor PSI gauge to build a PSI of at least 60.
    • Turn on the headlights.
    • Turn on hazard lights.
      • IF WINDSHIELD IS FOGGY, TURN ON EITHER HEAT OR COLD WAIT FOR WINDSHIELD TO CLEAR.
    • Fully Engage the foot brake pedal by holding down firmly.
    • Release the air brakes by pressing on the yellow then the red parking brake buttons.
    • Press "D" on dashboard to put the tractor into drive.
    • Check both directions for oncoming vehicles or personnel.
    • Slowly start to proceed forward making a wide turn out of the parking spot. 
      • Speed in the parking lot should not exceed 10mph.
    • Depending on where the truck is parked, you will have to turn different ways to enter the Drive Lane. 
      • If heading towards the fuel pump,make a wide turn around the outside of the fuel pump to avoid the tail end of the trailer hitting the fuel pump.
      • If heading towards the shipping containers, make a wide turn as needed to avoid the tail of the trailer hitting any other parked trucks. 
    • While approaching the entrance of the Drive Lane, do the following;
      • Stop at the entrance and look in both directions for employees crossing the Drive Lane.
      • Once the Drive Lane is clear of employees, Honk the Horn to signal entering the Drive Lane.
    • Slowly proceed forward until there is a minimum of 10 feet of space in between the truck you are driving and the truck in front of you. 
      • Speed in the Drive Lane should not exceed 7mph.
    • Fully Engage the foot brake pedal by holding down firmly.
    • Press "N" on dashboard to put the tractor into Neutral.
    • Engage the air brakes by pulling on the yellow then the red parking brake buttons. 
    • Turn off the Hazard lights.
    • Turn off the ignition.
    • Climb out of the tractor using three points of contact. 
    • Inspect the trailer, making sure the tractor is properly attached to the trailer, including brake lines, and that all bay doors are closed.
    • Climb into the tractor using three points of contact. 
    • Turn on the ignition.
    • Wait for the tractor PSI gauge to build a PSI of at least 60.
    • Turn on the headlights.
    • Turn on hazard lights.
    • Fully Engage the foot brake pedal by holding down firmly.
    • Release the air brakes by pressing on the yellow then the red parking brake buttons.
    • Press"R" on dashboard to put the tractor into Reverse.
    • After checking for loading or crossing personnel, slowly and carefully reverse, reducing the amount of space between the back of your trailer and the front of the tractor behind you from 10 feet to 5 feet. 
    • Fully Engage the foot brake pedal by holding down firmly.
    • Press "D" on dashboard to put the tractor into Drive.
    • Check both directions for oncoming vehicles or crossing personnel.
    • If the A and B lanes are blocked by vehicles, drive between the lanes.
      • Speed in the Drive Lane should not exceed 7mph.
      • Honk the horn whenever passing on the outside of a truck, to signal to other personell that your vehicle is moving.
    • While approaching the exit of the Drive Lane, do the following;
      • Stop at the exit and look in both directions for employees crossing the Drive Lane.
      • Once the Drive Lane is clear of employees, Honk the Horn to signal exiting the Drive Lane.
    • Slowly start to proceed forward into the the parking lot.
      • Speed in the parking lot should not exceed 10mph.
    • The first right turn should be a wide turn to avoid hitting the dumpsters and guardrails.
    • While approaching the fuel tanks, drive to the right of the fuel tank and between both rows of tractors. 
    •       Decrease speed and find a parking space.
    • Make a wide turn into the parking space to avoid hitting parked vehicles.
    • Fully Engage the foot brake pedal by holding down firmly.
    • Press "N" on dashboard to put the tractor into Neutral.
    • Engage the air brakes by pulling on the yellow then the red parking brake buttons. 
    • Turn off the hazard lights.
    • Turn off the headlights.
    • Turn off the ignition.
    • Climb out of the tractor using three points of contact.
