DEADLINE: January 7, 2024
The 2024 JR Academy (April 8-25, 2024) is being jointly offered by the International Ocean Discovery Program's U.S. Science Support office (USSSP) and the Australia and New Zealand IODP Consortium (ANZIC).
During JR Academy, students will be exposed to and participate in a wide range of Earth and ocean science activities, as well as learning science communication skills and careers, while sailing on and living aboard the JOIDES Resolution. A major focus on the 2024 program is exploring the bridges between Western and Indigenous (both North American, Australia and New Zealand) science, benefiting First Nations Peoples.
Mentors are anticipated to engage in a blended teaching and learning environment on the JR Academy. It is expected that successful candidates will collaborate closely with course instructors to contribute to program development, conduct a one-day teaching session on a topic of their choice, provide mentorship for student group projects. Mentors may be called upon to offer pastoral care to JR Academy participants. In addition to these responsibilities, applicants should also actively participate in course lessons and geological field trips in both Italy and Iceland.
If accepted into the JR Academy, all student and mentors' travel and participation fees will be covered by ANZIC. This includes medicals, visas, flights, meals and accommodation during the program. Unfortunately funding and ANZIC support cannot cover insurance or primary researcher salaries. Travel insurance and salaries are expected to be paid by your host institute.
Eligibility
- You must reside in Australia or New Zealand at the time of application and program
- Must hold, or be able to obtain a passport and appropriate visas for the duration of the program and destination
