  • 1. Purpose

    This policy outlines the guidelines for parents to purchase laptops for their college-going children from the college's online portal. The objective is to ensure that students have access to laptops with appropriate specifications for their academic needs, while also promoting a safe and secure learning environment by implementing necessary software and web filters.

    2. Laptop Specifications

    Parents must purchase laptops for their children from the college's online portal. The laptops should meet the following specifications:

    Processor: Ryzen 5, Intel Core i5 or i7
    RAM: 8GB or 16GB
    Storage: 256GB or 512GB SSD (Solid State Drive)
    Operating System: Windows 10 or later (No iOS)
    Device Type: Windows laptop (No MacBook or Chromebook or Tablet or iPad)

    3. Software Configuration

    Upon receiving the laptops purchased from the college portal, the college will take responsibility for configuring the devices with essential software. The following software will be installed:

    • Microsoft Office 365: To facilitate academic tasks, document creation, cloud storage and collaboration.
    • Antivirus: To ensure a secure computing environment and protect against potential threats.

    4. Web Filtering

    To foster a safer online environment and monitor students' laptop activity, each laptop will have a web filtering system installed. The web filter will be configured to restrict access to inappropriate or harmful content, ensuring a more secure online experience for students.

    5. College Responsibility

    The college will take the necessary steps to ensure the laptops are delivered to the appropriate department responsible for the configuration and installation of software and web filters. It is the college's responsibility to:

    • Handle the laptops with care during the configuration process.
    • Install the required software according to college licensing policies.
    • Set up the web filtering system in compliance with the college's acceptable use policy and local regulations.

    6. Student Privacy

    The college recognizes the importance of protecting student privacy. All monitoring of laptop activity will be carried out in accordance with applicable privacy laws and college policies. Any data collected through the web filtering system will be used solely for educational purposes and to ensure a safer computing environment for all students.

    7. Support and Maintenance

    The college's ICT (Information and Communication Technology) department will provide technical support and assistance to students regarding laptop issues related to the installed software and web filter during their academic journey.

    8. Hardware and warranty:

    The ICT department will contact the company that provides the online portal page for the device. This company is responsible for maintaining any hardware issues for the device if it is covered under warranty. Physical damage to the device is not covered under warranty and it is recommended, at the time of purchasing the device, Parents should check the ‘accidental insurance’ option. Parents are advised to carefully review the terms and conditions of Warranty as well as Accidental insurance for better understanding of what is covered and what is not. The ICT department may not be able to provide much assistance in case of ‘physical damage’ to the device. Parents are advised to liaise with insurance company directly for any claims related to accidental damage.

    The cost of the laptops will be communicated clearly on the college online portal. Parents are required to make the payment through the provided secure payment methods during the purchase process.

    10. Alternative Options

    If parents have laptops meeting the specified specifications, they have the option to use their laptops instead. However, the college will not be responsible for configuring or maintaining such devices.

    11. Compliance

    Parents are expected to comply with this policy and purchase laptops through the college online portal to ensure consistency in hardware specifications and software installations.

    By adhering to this policy, parents, students, and the college will collectively contribute to creating a secure and conducive academic environment, allowing students to focus on their studies and achieve their full potential.
