Vision and Mission: This program, funded by K & C Music Company and administered by MMEA’s Growing Music in MASS Fund, will provide scholarships for graduates of an approved Massachusetts high school program of study that are entering a college level program with a major in Music Education. This program seeks to encourage students that want to become music teachers, and thus foster the perpetuation of high-quality music education for the students of Massachusetts.
Application Guidelines:
Two (2) scholarships, in the amount of $2,500 each, will be awarded to two students that have met the full requirements for graduation from an approved Massachusetts high school and have been accepted into an approved music education program at an accredited institution of higher learning. Successful scholarship awardees will have participated fully (to their best extent) in their school’s music program, which may include appropriate ensembles or sequencing of coursework within the music curriculum, and has received a recommendation from their school’s music director.
Eligibility, Criteria and Procedures:
1) Only NAfME / MMEA current members whose memberships remain active may recommend a student or students for a John P. Casey Scholarship.
2) A letter of college acceptance will be submitted from the recommending’s Guidance Department for consideration.
Scholarship funds will be used to defray tuition costs only, not for books, instruments or instrument supplies, transportation, or any other costs that a student may incur.
Scholarship funding will be paid directly to the college or university, not to the student or his / her/their family.
3) Students are asked, as part of the application, to submit a letter (not more than three pages) to the selection committee explaining what music education has meant to them in the course of their schooling, and why they’ve chosen it as a career. The letter may be the original or modified version of what they include in their college applications, or something personal and original that will help the committee decide on their application.
