ASLRRA ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD

This award recognizes a Class II or III railroad that has designed and enacted the most innovative and successful environmental initiative in the small railroad industry, reducing the company’s environmental impact or contributing to meeting sustainability goals for the railroad and/or their shipper(s).

Eligibility and outcome are not affected by the size of a competing railroad’s project or operations. Railroads that have developed any of the following should consider entering:

• A sustainability plan or report.

• An innovative method for reducing emissions from operations.

• Implementing new methods, or projects for improving or reducing environmental impacts.

· Participation in EPA SmartWay Program.

The award program is open to all ASLRRA railroad members who submit a nomination addressing the following questions. Questions should be answered with as much detail as possible and include measurable outcomes if available.

A railroad may submit more than one entry.

1. Please describe your project, program or initiative, including outcomes.

2. How has the project, program or initiative leveraged the unique characteristics of your short line?

3. How has company engaged with the larger transportation network in support of this project, program or initiative? For example, working successfully with environmental authorities, Class I railroads or shippers to elevate environmental stewardship, showcasing the positive impact of the railroad’s environmental initiatives.

4. How has the project, program or initiative engaged the community? For example, raising awareness of the positive environmental impact that rail has in the community; educating community leaders on the benefits of rail, and the commitment the railroad has made to a sustainability plan; or other measurable initiatives for public good.

5. Has the company actively engaged in an emission disclosure program such as EPA SmartWay, CDP, or other reputable organization? Please describe.
